GAME NOTES: The UNLV Runnin' Rebels play their final road game of the season today as they settle in against the Air Force Falcons for a Mountain West Conference showdown at Clune Arena.
Since suffering a tough three-game slide that resulted in their expulsion from the AP Poll, the Rebels have bounced back with two straight wins against the likes of Colorado State (70-39) and TCU (78-62), the latest coming against the Horned Frogs at home on Wednesday night.
As for the Falcons, this is another season that they'd prefer to forget, seeing as how they have just a single conference win in 13 chances and are still searching for their first true road win in 2009-10. Three nights ago, the academy was saddled with a 54-43 setback by Utah, the squad's sixth consecutive loss and the 12th in the last 13 contests overall.
With respect to the all-time series between these two schools on the hardwood, UNLV leads 22-8 and has won four in a row, thanks in part to a 60-50 victory at the Thomas & Mack Center in the first meeting of the season last month.
Shooting 53.6 percent from the field in the first half, the Rebels easily put TCU behind them as they cruised to the 16-point home win. Chace Stanback and Tre'Von Willis both tallied 16 points, followed by Kendall Wallace and Brice Massamba with 12 and 10 points, respectively. The team got away with shooting just 8-of-23 behind the three-point line on the night. Willis remains the team's scoring leader with his 17.9 ppg, thanks in large part to his 148- of-175 effort at the free-throw line. More than just a scorer, Willis is also second on the team in both assists (94) and steals (35) and is also active on the glass with almost four boards per outing. Stanback adds 10.1 ppg as the other double-digit scorer for a team generating 74.3 ppg.
Of the 43 points scored by Air Force against Utah earlier this week, almost half were posted by Grant Parker and Todd Fletcher as they deposited 11 and 10 points, respectively. Perhaps most disappointing about the academy's effort was the fact that Evan Washington took and missed all three of his field goal attempts and was left with just a single point in 36 minutes of action. Washington is still second on the team in scoring with his 10.7 ppg and first with his 80 assists, while Parker assumes the leading scoring role with his 13.6 ppg, even though he has played in 10 fewer games than Washington. Of the 334 programs at the Division I level that the NCAA considers for statistical rankings, Air Force is currently 329th in the country in scoring with only 58.0 ppg. The squad's scoring defense has managed to hold opponents to just 63.3 ppg, which is 53rd in the nation at the moment, yet that's still not good enough given the team's inability to score itself.
The Rebels could use some more confidence-building games as they prepare for the upcoming conference tournament, so Air Force had better be ready for another rough outing today.
