GAME NOTES: The top team in the Big West Conference will take the floor this evening when the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos take on the Cal Poly Mustangs at Mott Gym.
The Gauchos are currently 11-3 in conference play and with a victory tonight the team can claim its second straight regular season title. The last time the Gauchos were in action the team grabbed its sixth straight victory with a 74-69 decision over Cal State Northridge.
The Mustangs fell to 6-8 in league play the last time they were on the floor, as they lost to Cal State Fullerton, 70-68. It was the seventh loss in the last nine games for Cal Poly, which is just 5-5 at home this season.
In regard to the all-time series between the two schools on the hardwood, the Gauchos own a commanding, 63-30 edge over Cal Poly. UCSB has won the last five meetings on the hardwood, and that includes an 80-57 decision earlier this season.
The last time the Gauchos were on the floor the team overcame 24 turnovers, by shooting 47.8 percent from the floor, en route to a victory over Cal State Northridge. Orlando Johnson scored 19 points and dished out seven assists, while James Nunnally and Jaime Serna posted 15 points apiece. Johnson has been the best player on the floor for UC Santa Barbara, as the guard is averaging 17.8 ppg, 5.5 rpg and has also dished out 58 assists. Nunnally is posting 14.8 ppg and is also grabbing 5.5 rpg for UCSB, which as a whole is producing 67.9 ppg. The Gauchos have relied heavily on their play defensively, as the team is holding opponents to a mere 65.8 ppg.
The Mustangs were inconsistent in their last matchup, shooting just 38.1 percent from the floor, en route to a loss to Cal State Fullerton. Cal Poly finished just 3-of-19 from behind the arc, and was paced by Shawn Lewis who posted a double-double of 19 points and 11 rebounds. David Hanson and Lorenzo Keeler added 13 and 12 points, respectively, while Hanson also grabbed nine rebounds. Keeler is pacing the team with 15.9 ppg on the season, while Lewis and Hanson are contributing 11.4 and 10.4 ppg, respectively. As a whole, the Mustangs are producing 70.0 ppg, but at the same time the team is surrendering 75.5 ppg.
This is a very important game for UC Santa Barbara, so even though the team is on the road, look for the Gauchos to grab a victory and earn another regular season title.
