GAME NOTES: The Old Dominion Monarchs aim to lock down the title in the Colonial Athletic Association as they host the Virginia Commonwealth Rams in the regular-season finale at the Ted Constant Convocation Center in Norfolk this afternoon.
ODU moved into first place all on its own on Tuesday night with its 75-62 win at Georgia State. The victory was the fourth in the last five games for the program and pushed it to 14-3 in CAA play. At this point, a win gives the Monarchs the regular-season title and the top spot in the upcoming CAA Tournament, as long as second-place Northeastern doesn't confuse the issue.
As for the Rams, they are tied with William & Mary for fourth place in the standings at 11-6, so there is still something for VCU to shoot for. VCU, which is just 5-6 on the road in 2009-10, won its third game in a row on Wednesday night with a 76-62 victory over James Madison at home, which raises a number of different scenarios when it comes to tournament seeding.
Virginia Commonwealth won the first meeting of the season between these two teams with a 70-58 triumph at home earlier this month, which means the all- time series still favors the Rams, 42-38.
The VCU defense did the job earlier this week as it held the Dukes to just 5- of-19 shooting behind the three-point line, a total of just seven offensive rebounds and 17 turnovers as the Rams picked up the win. Joey Rodriguez led four players in double figures with 24 points, while Bradford Burgess contributed 16, followed by Ed Nixon and Brandon Rozzell with 10 points apiece in the triumph. Larry Sanders, the team's leading scorer (15.1 ppg) and rebounder (9.0 rpg) came off the bench versus JMU and was credited with just seven points and seven boards. Sanders, a 55.6 percent shooter from the floor who also has 65 of the team's 107 blocked shots, could stand some improvement at the free-throw line (.664) and in passing (26 assists), but that's typical for an interior performer. Rodriguez (12.1 ppg) handles the passing aspect of the game for the Rams with his 162 assists over 27 starts.
The Monarchs put themselves in charge of their own destiny on Tuesday night when they easily handled Georgia State on the road. Keyon Carter and Kent Bazemore each delivered with 14 points and five rebounds, while Marsharee Neely tacked on 13 points in just 13 minutes in a reserve role. Gerald Lee tacked on 12 points as the squad shot 54.2 percent from the floor and survived 16-of-25 at the charity stripe. As successful as the Monarchs are this season, it is somewhat stunning that this squad has just a single player, Lee (14.1 ppg) scoring in double figures in 2009-10. Then again, this is a program that is built on a defense that has locked up opponents more often than not by limiting those squads to just 56.5 ppg based on 39.8 percent shooting from the field and 30.1 percent behind the three-point line by those foes.
Both teams have quite a bit riding on this meeting and even though the pressure might be greater on ODU, knowing that it is just that close to an undefeated record at home will be added incentive.

Where the players come to play and STAY.
