GAME NOTES: With the regular season quickly coming to an end the Central Michigan Chippewas will host the Western Michigan Broncos in a Mid-American Conference tussle that will likely dictate conference tournament seeding.
The Broncos pushed their league mark to an even 7-7 on the season with a 61-41 victory over Toledo on Wednesday. It was the second win in the last three games for Western Michigan, which is just 3-9 on the road this season.
The last time the Chippewas were in action the team suffered a tough, 67-65 setback to Northern Illinois. It was the fifth loss in the last seven games for CMU, which is now just 7-7 in conference action.
Earlier this season the Broncos grabbed a 70-61 victory over Central Michigan, pushing their lead in the all-time series to a commanding, 78-44 margin.
The last time the Broncos took the court the team only scored 61 points, but that was more than enough for them to get past Toledo. Western Michigan shot 54.2 percent from the field and finished 6-of-14 from long range. Martelle McLemore led the way with 19 points, while Flenard Whitfield tallied 12 points off the bench. As for David Kool, he surprisingly finished with just two points. Despite the poor showing, Kool is still one of the most dangerous players in the conference and comes into this game netting 20.8 ppg for WMU, which as a whole is producing a mediocre 69.5 ppg.
The Chippewas fell short in their last contest, scoring just 65 points in a loss to Northern Illinois. Central Michigan shot 48.9 percent from the floor, but also committed 19 turnovers in the setback. Jordan Bitzer scored 20 points, while Robbie Harman tallied 19 points. Harman and Bitzer have been the top two players throughout the season for CMU, as Harman is pacing the team with 14.6 ppg and 77 assists, while Bitzer is also netting 14.6 ppg, to go along with 4.8 rpg. As a whole however, the team is producing a lackluster 64.7 ppg, behind a pedestrian 41.0 percent shooting effort.
The Broncos have dominated the all-time series between the two schools, but look for the Chippewas to grab a victory this afternoon on their home floor.
