GAME NOTES: The regular season comes to a close this afternoon for Horizon League foes Green Bay and Loyola-Chicago.
Green Bay carried a modest two-game win streak into Thursday's matchup with Illinois-Chicago, but that game ended in a 78-71 defeat. The Phoenix are now 19-11 overall, and they own a 10-6 mark in league play. They need a victory today to assure themselves of a top-four seed in next week's Horizon League Tournament.
As for Loyola-Chicago, it has suffered losses in three straight games and in five of its last six to fall to 14-14 overall and 5-12 in conference. The Ramblers dropped a heart-breaking 63-61 decision to Milwaukee on Thursday, marking the club's fifth loss in 14 home games this season.
Back in early December, Green Bay crushed Loyola in a 90-69 final, and the Phoenix own a 20-14 series advantage over the Ramblers.
Rahmon Fletcher continues to pace Green Bay in scoring with 16.4 ppg, and Bryquis Perine provides 13.1 ppg and 4.1 apg. Troy Cotton checks in with 11.6 ppg for the Phoenix, who are generating 68.1 ppg while allowing 66.9 ppg to opponents. Fletcher scored a team-high 17 points against UIC on Thursday, and Cotton pitched in 15 points. Perine netted 13 points to go along with five assists, and Rian Pearson contributed 12 points and eight rebounds before fouling out. Green Bay actually led the Flames by a score of 32-24 at intermission, but the Phoenix permitted 50 percent shooting in the second half.
Geoff McCammon was tremendous for Loyola on Thursday against Milwaukee, as he poured in 22 points on 10-of-19 shooting from the floor. Terrance Hill added 11 points for the Ramblers, but they committed 16 turnovers and were outscored 17-2 from the foul line. Loyola led by nine points at intermission before falling apart defensively in the second half. Overall this season, Hill is averaging 11.7 ppg despite his 38.4 percent shooting from the floor. McCammon adds 11.1 ppg, and Walt Gibler provides 10.8 ppg off the bench. The Ramblers are averaging a modest 64.6 ppg on 42.4 percent field goal efficiency, and they are permitting 66.1 ppg to foes.
Side with the road team in this affair, as Green Bay will complete the season sweep of Loyola.
