GAME NOTES: The Saint Louis Billikens and the Rhode Island Rams clash in the quarterfinals of the 2010 Atlantic 10 Conference Tournament at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City this afternoon.
The fifth-seeded Rams are playing their second game of the 34th annual event after defeating Saint Joseph's in the first round on Tuesday night by a final of 87-76. The win for the Rams gives them a record of 19-28 in the tourney, an event that they won back in 1999.
As for the fourth-seeded Billikens, a squad that has a mark of just 3-4 in the tournament since joining the league, they've lost both of their neutral-site games this season, but are coming off a favorable 71-66 defeat of Dayton in the regular-season finale last weekend.
With respect to the all-time series between these two schools on the hardwood, the Billikens own a 5-2 mark against URI after taking a 62-57 decision at Chaifetz Arena last month.
The winner of this meeting will move on to the semifinals on Saturday to face the survivor of the St. Bonaventure/Temple battle.
On Tuesday night, Lamonte Ulmer and Keith Cothran both tallied 15 points as they helped defeat the Saint Joseph's Hawks by double digits at the Ryan Center in Kingston. Also scoring in double figures for URI was Delroy James with his 11 points. The team finished the night shooting a solid 51.7 percent from the field and 10-of-25 behind the three-point line, compared to 8-of-24 out on the perimeter for the visitors. Cothran is one of three active players scoring in double figures for the Rams with his 15.0 ppg, while James and Ulmer contribute 12.7 and 11.8 ppg, respectively. Ulmer is also responsible for a team-best 7.3 rpg and has shot 52.5 percent from the floor, but for some reason he has also moved out to the perimeter from time to time where he has converted only 6-of-27 shots.
The leading scorer in three of the last four games for the Billikens, Kwamain Mitchell is responsible for a team-high 16.1 ppg this season, thanks in part to his 51-of-144 shooting beyond the arc in 2009-10. The top man in steals with 41, Mitchell is also second on the team in assists with 85 over the course of his 29 starts. Willie Reed accounts for another 11.8 ppg and has been dominating in the paint for the group with his 8.0 rpg and 60 blocked shots. While Reed has converted an impressive 56.8 percent from the floor, the fact that he has made a woeful 69-of-146 (.473) at the charity stripe means that he is a potential liability in close games down the stretch. Cody Ellis adds 11.6 ppg for a team that is shooting just 61.9 percent at the free-throw line this season.
If this game is close it will be the Rams who will have the advantage, not just because they've been in action recently, but because the Billikens can't seem to get out of their own way at the charity stripe.
