Arkansas State (1-5) at (14) Memphis (5-0)

GAME NOTES: The 14th-ranked Memphis Tigers welcome the Arkansas State Red Wolves to town for what appears to be a non-conference mismatch.

Arkansas State has played six games already, and just one of those contests has resulted in victory. Fortunately, that win came in the team's most recent outing, as it defeated Southeast Missouri on Saturday by a 56-50 final. The Red Wolves are members of the Sun Belt Conference and are guided by head coach John Brady, now in his third year with the program.

As for Memphis, a Conference USA squad led by second-year head coach Josh Pastner, it has yet to suffer a defeat, winning all five games thus far. The team has been idle since November 23rd when it knocked off Tennessee-Martin by a 102-80 final. With wins over Miami-Florida of the ACC and LSU of the SEC, the Tigers have two quality victories on their resume'.

Memphis owns a narrow 31-26 advantage in the all-time series with Arkansas State.

There is only one double-digit scorer in the lineup for Arkansas State, as Martavius Adams provides 14.7 ppg on the strength of his 50.7 percent shooting from the floor. Adams is also ripping down 6.5 rpg for the Red Wolves, who are generating only 63.2 ppg on 39 percent field goal efficiency. The team is surrendering 72.8 ppg to opponents and are being outrebounded by nearly four boards per contest. In the victory over Southeast Missouri last time out, Arkansas State actually fell below its season scoring average, netting just 56 points on 35.3 percent shooting from the field, including 25 percent from three-point range. Fortunately for the Red Wolves, they were able to limit the opposition to 34 percent shooting and 50 points. Adams came through with 18 points and 10 rebounds in that affair before fouling out, while Trey Finn netted 11 points.

While Arkansas State has just one double-digit scorer, Memphis boasts three, including team leader Wesley Witherspoon with his 15.4 ppg. Witherspoon is shooting a stellar 65.5 percent from the floor and is an 87.5 percent shooter from the foul line. He also paces the club with 5.6 rpg, and his importance to the Tigers shouldn't be underestimated. Joe Jackson checks in with 12.0 ppg, and Will Barton provides 11.0 ppg. Memphis is generating 88.4 ppg on 47.7 percent shooting from the field, and the club is limiting foes to 65.6 ppg on 37.8 percent field goal efficiency. In the romp over Tennessee-Martin, Will Coleman was impressive for the Tigers, as he shot 8-of-9 from the floor off the bench and finished with 20 points. Barton had 20 points in that game as well, while Jackson (16 points) and Witherspoon (14 points) were solid as well. Memphis shot 51.4 percent from the floor and racked up 29 assists in the affair. A 44-31 rebounding advantage also helped the cause.

The Tigers are a much better team than Arkansas State and will remain unbeaten this evening. Coach Brady has a great deal of work to do to make the Red Wolves a contender.
