Elon (2-3) at Furman (3-2)

GAME NOTES: Southern Conference action makes its 2010-11 debut for two teams tonight, as the Elon Phoenix pay a visit to the Paladins of Furman.

Elon is due for a win as the Phoenix have alternated wins and losses through their first five contests so far this season. Last time out, Elon fell, 76-57, on the road at Maryland last Friday.

After starting the season with two victories, Furman has fallen in two of its last three battles, including a 70-49 defeat at Penn State on Sunday.

This matchup marks the 11th meeting all-time between these two clubs, with Elon holding a 7-3 advantage, which includes a 66-55 win at Timmons Arena last season.

It was a tale of two halves for Elon in its recent loss to Maryland as the Phoenix found themselves leading by as many as 11 points in the opening half, ultimately taking a 34-31 advantage into the locker room at intermission after holding the Terrapins to 39.3 percent shooting from the floor. However, Elon went ice cold after the break, shooting a miserable 25 percent from the field while letting Maryland connect on 51.4 percent of its field goal attempts, outscoring the Phoenix 45-23 in the second stanza en route to the victory. Despite the loss, Elon saw the future shine as freshman guard Jack Isenbarger converted eight of his 19 shots from the floor en route to a team-leading 23 points. Isenbarger paces the Phoenix on the season, averaging 17.2 ppg, while senior guard Chris Long follows with 12.2 ppg, connecting on an impressive 62.5 percent of his field goal attempts, good enough for third-best in the Southern Conference at the moment.

Furman struggled out of the gate in its 70-46 defeat at Penn State last Sunday. Furman trailed by a significant 41-25 margin at the intermission after letting the Nittany Lions connect on 60 percent of their shots from the floor, including an awesome eight-of-11 from beyond the arc. The Paladins only managed to shoot 34.8 percent from the field in the opening 20 minutes and 37.5 percent for the entire affair en route to the loss. Furman was outmuscled in the trenches as PSU outscored the Paladins by an embarrassing 24-4 mark in the paint. Furman was uncomfortable in that area throughout the whole game, coming up with just 19 rebounds compared to Penn State's 33. Senior guard Justin Dehm scored 12 points in 20 minutes coming off the bench to lead Furman, while senior forward Amu Saaka nets 17.2 ppg to pace the Paladins on the season.

While Furman will be hoping to bounce back at home after a rough loss at Penn State, expect Elon to continue its up-and-down pace with a tough, well-earned road win.
