GAME NOTES: First-year head coach Tom Pecora leads his Fordham Rams into tonight's non-conference clash with the Harvard Crimson.
Fordham has had the obvious advantage of playing its first five games at home, and three of those have resulted in defeat. Considering that the losses have come to the likes of Brown, Hampton and Long Island, it is obvious that the Rams are still far from becoming a contender in the Atlantic 10 Conference. On a positive note, Pecora's club did defeat Hartford on Saturday by a 61-57 final.
As for Harvard, it opened the season with a double-digit road loss to George Mason, but the team hasn't tasted defeat since that setback. The Crimson has ripped off four consecutive wins to move to 4-1 overall, and the team is coming off an 82-66 victory over Colorado of the Big 12 Conference. Obviously, a win over a Big 12 team is considered a major accomplishment for a club from the Ivy League, so Harvard figures to enter this evening's affair with plenty of confidence.
Fordham owns a 7-2 series advantage over Harvard, which includes wins in each of the past two meetings.
There are four double-digit scorers in the fold for Fordham, and big man Chris Gaston is averaging 15.8 ppg and 13.0 rpg, impressive to say the least. Gaston has also blocked 10 shots, but he has committed a staggering total of 26 turnovers, a problem that must be addressed immediately. Brenton Butler provides 14.0 ppg and 5.0 apg for the Rams, who are getting 14.0 ppg from Branden Frazier as well. Alberto Estwick rounds out the foursome with 13.6 ppg for Fordham, which is generating only 62.6 ppg because of a complete lack of depth. In fact, the fifth and sixth leading scorers on the roster are netting 3.4 ppg and 3.0 ppg, respectively, and no one else is averaging more than 0.8 ppg. The Rams have been able to play strong defense, limiting opponents to 63.4 ppg while outrebounding them by 12 rpg. Estwick scored 16 points against Hartford last time out, and Frazier added 15 points. Gaston pitched in 14 points for the Rams, who limited the Hawks to 34.5 percent shooting, key to the win.
Harvard is posting 70.2 ppg this season, and there are three double-digit scorers in the fold. Keith Wright, a sophomore forward, leads the club with 17.2 ppg on his 73.3 percent shooting from the floor and 80 percent efficiency from the foul line. More than just a scorer, Wright is ripping down 8.8 rpg as well. Christian Webster, a fellow sophomore, adds 16.2 ppg from the back court. Brandyn Curry rounds out the threesome with 10.6 ppg, and he has dished out nearly seven assists per contest. Webster scored 20 points to lead the charge in the victory over Colorado, and Wright was close behind with 19 points. In 32 minutes of action, Wright shot 8-of-11 from the floor and tallied nine rebounds, six assists and three blocks to go along with his point total. Oliver McNally ended with 17 points and five assists for the Crimson, who got eight assists from Curry. Harvard shot 51 percent from the floor and held the Buffaloes to 38.8 percent shooting.
It is far too early to tell, but Harvard may be the most talented team in the Ivy League. Expect the Crimson to move to 5-1 with a victory over the Rams, who are too careless with the ball to win most times out.
