GAME NOTES: The George Washington Colonials have made the short trip to Fairfax, Virginia to clash with the George Mason Patriots in non-conference action.
George Washington needs a victory in this tilt, as it has suffered back-to- back losses to fall to 2-3 overall. The Colonials were most recently in action on Monday when they dropped a 73-69 decision to UNC Wilmington, and tonight's tilt marks their first true road game of the season.
As for George Mason, it is coming off a 66-51 victory over Florida Atlantic on Saturday, and that win was the 250th for head coach Jim Larranaga, now in his 14th season in Fairfax. The Patriots have now won their last two outings and are 4-2 overall, including a perfect 3-0 at home.
The Colonials have won 10 of their 11 all-time meetings with George Mason, including a 66-49 romp over the Patriots last season.
Through five outings, George Washington is generating 64.8 ppg on just 36 percent shooting from the field. The Colonials, who are yielding 65.2 ppg, have three double-digit scorers in the lineup. Tony Taylor provides 14.4 ppg, and he is handing out 4.8 apg as well. Joseph Katuka checks in with 11.2 ppg and 5.8 rpg, while Nemanja Mikic adds 11.0 ppg. Taking a close look at the four-point loss to UNC Wilmington two days ago, George Washington played solid ball in the first half and led by five points at intermission. Unfortunately, the squad fell apart in the second half, shooting 32.3 percent from the floor while allowing 51.7 percent shooting to the Seahawks. The Colonials got a tremendous effort from Mikic in that affair, as he scored 23 points on the strength of a 7-of-13 effort from three-point range. Katuka and Dwayne Smith contributed 10 points apiece in the setback.
Like George Washington, George Mason has three double-digit scorers in the fold. Luke Hancock provides 13.2 ppg on 56 percent shooting from the floor, and he has dished out 4.7 apg. Cam Long provides 12.5 ppg, and Ryan Pearson rounds out the trio with 11.8 ppg. The Patriots are generating 72.5 ppg on 47.9 percent field goal efficiency, and the squad is limiting opponents to 62.5 ppg on 41.5 percent shooting. A key to their success thus far is a rebounding differential of +5.5 rpg. Against Florida Atlantic on Saturday, George Mason raced to an 11-point lead at intermission and cruised to victory in the second half. Mike Morrison led a balanced attack with 18 points and seven rebounds, as he shot 8-of-10 from the floor. The Patriots connected on 54.2 percent of their field goal attempts.
The edge goes to George Mason tonight, which will remain perfect at home. The Patriots are extremely well coached and will likely lead throughout the second half.
