GAME NOTES: The Hawaii Warriors get their first taste of the road tonight as they travel to the mainland to confront the Cal Poly Mustangs in non- conference action at Mott Gymnasium in San Luis Obispo.
Off to a 5-0 start for the first time since 2004-05 when the program opened with eight consecutive victories, Hawaii has done all of its damage in the safe confines of the Stan Sheriff Center. First there was the Rainbow Classic in which the Warriors ran through Montana State, Cal State Fullerton and Central Michigan to take yet another title. More recently the squad recorded a 70-63 win over Arkansas-Pine Bluff on November 24 to remained undefeated.
As for the Mustangs, they lost for the third time in the last four outings on Saturday night when they were bounced by in-state rival Sacramento State on the road in a 71-67 final. Cal Poly has just two wins thus far in 2010-11, coming against Seattle University and Loyola Marymount.
In terms of the all-time series, each team has beaten the other once previously, with the most recent matchup taking place last season as the Mustangs scored a 102-89 win in February.
Trailing by three points at the break the last time out against Pine Bluff, the Warriors dialed up the defensive pressure in the second half and held the visitors to a mere 34.4 percent shooting from the field and 3-of-12 behind the three-point line to rebound and grab the victory. Hawaii, which turned the ball over 19 times, outscored Pine Bluff by a 25-10 margin at the free-throw line and also claimed a 40-28 rebounding advantage thanks to Vander Joaquim who had a game-high 16 boards himself. Joston Thomas and Zane Johnson both tallied 16 points and Hiram Thompson 15 for the hosts. Thompson, the most experience among active players for the Warriors, has scored in double figures in all but one game and is putting up 14.2 ppg overall. Bill Amis currently sits atop the scoring list for Hawaii with his 15.8 ppg and is also responsible for 6.8 rpg, but he is again suffering from a foot injury that has him watching from the sidelines, just as he did all of the 2009-10 season. Thomas (13.2 ppg, 6.2 rpg) can handle some of the action in the paint, but missing out on the leadership from Amis is something else altogether.
Cal Poly shot an impressive 8-of-18 behind the three-point line in the first half against Sacramento State on the road Saturday night, but the squad then fell to just 2-of-13 out on the perimeter after the break, pushing the Mustangs into the loss column yet again. David Hanson, shooting 5-of-10 beyond the arc, finished with a game-high 23 points, followed by Shawn Lewis and Chris O'Brien with 14 and 12 points, respectively. Hanson is leading a trio of double-digit scorers for the Mustangs right now with his 17.2 ppg. Not only is Hanson a valued interior player with almost six and a half rebounds per contest, he also stands as the top three-point threat with 12 conversions out on the perimeter, which is two less than the entire rest of the roster after five games. Shawn Lewis is putting up 13.4 ppg and 7.2 rpg and is first with 14 assists, yet this is a group that hasn't worked that well in unison, averaging less than 12 assists per game right now.
Cal Poly is scoring just 60.4 ppg and has had trouble shooting the ball from all over the floor, so the Warriors definitely have a fighting chance in this their first trip of the season to the mainland.

Where the players come to play and STAY.
