GAME NOTES: City rivals will collide in Philadelphia tonight, as the Saint Joseph's Hawks of the Atlantic 10 Conference take on the Drexel Dragons of the Colonial Athletic Association.
This season did not start well for Saint Joseph's, which suffered back-to-back defeats, including a 28-point home loss to Western Kentucky. Credit head coach Phil Martelli for turning things around, however, as the Hawks have recorded three consecutive victories to move to 3-2 overall. On Friday, the team cruised to a 76-70 victory over Rutgers.
Drexel has played only four games to date, three of which have resulted in victories. The Dragons put forth their best effort of the season on Sunday as they dominated Binghamton at both ends of the floor en route to a 79-39 triumph. On Saturday, Drexel will begin CAA play against Northeastern.
The Hawks own a commanding 41-8 series advantage over the Dragons, which includes a 77-67 overtime victory last season.
Saint Joseph's led Rutgers by six points at intermission on Friday and played well enough in the second half to hold on for the win. The Hawks connected on 51 percent of their field goal attempts and racked up 19 assists, overshadowing a rather high total of 17 turnovers. They also earned a 35-27 rebounding advantage and an 18-10 edge in points from the foul line. Carl Jones scored 21 points in the victory, and Langston Galloway netted 20 points to go along with eight assists. As for Idris Hilliard, he posted 10 points in 33 minutes of action. Jones is the leading scorer for Martelli's team through five outings, as he is netting 15.4 ppg despite 37 percent shooting from the field. Galloway checks in with 13.4 ppg, and he is pulling down 6.0 rpg. As for Hilliard, he provides 11.0 ppg on 53.5 percent shooting. The Hawks are scoring 66.6 ppg while allowing 70.0 ppg to their opponents.
Chris Fouch put forth an amazing effort off the bench for Drexel against Binghamton, as he nailed 8-of-11 three-pointers and finished with 30 points in 28 minutes of action. Samme Givens posted 12 points and 15 rebounds, while Frantz Massenat and Dartaye Ruffin both scored 10 points. The Dragons connected on 51.8 percent of their field goal attempts, including 50 percent from behind the arc, and they limited Binghamton to 33.3 percent shooting from the floor. Drexel finished with a 39-20 rebounding advantage, including a 13-4 edge on the offensive glass, and the club tallied 21 assists against six turnovers. Fouch has yet to start a game, but he is averaging 21.5 ppg. Givens adds 11.5 ppg and 11.8 rpg, and Dartaye Ruffin checks in 11.3 ppg. As for Derrick Thomas, he provides 10.8 ppg for the Dragons, who are generating 74.8 ppg while limiting foes to 60.2 ppg on 39.4 percent field goal efficiency.
In what figures to be a close game from start to finish, give a narrow edge to Drexel based solely on the homecourt advantage. Fouch will continue to shine off the bench.
