GAME NOTES: Instate foes lock up in Tuscaloosa tonight, as the South Alabama Jaguars challenge the Alabama Crimson Tide in a non-conference matchup at Coleman Coliseum.
The Tide enter the contest on a winning note, as it easily disposed of Alabama A&M, 76-50, on Saturday. It was an encouraging result after Alabama went 0-3 at the Paradise Jam. The Tide is now a level 3-3 overall, with all three of its victories coming at home.
As for USA, this is the team's second straight game against an SEC squad, falling 80-65 against LSU on Sunday. It was the second loss in a row for the Jaguars, who now sit at 2-3 on the year. The team has yet to find any success on the road either, going 0-2 as the visitor.
The all-time series between Alabama and USA is knotted at 1-1, with the Tide taking the last meeting, 59-45, during the 1998-99 campaign.
The Jaguars shot a dismal 33.2 percent from the floor, as they were thrashed by LSU over the weekend. USA, which trailed 48-23 at the break, also allowed LSU to hit on 53.2 percent of its attempts from the field and 12-of-17 from three-point range. Martino Brock paced the squad in defeat with 15 points and a pair of steals, while P.J. Reyes scored 12 points in 14 minutes of action off the bench. Tim Williams though, couldn't find his stroke, going just 2- of-10 from the field on the way to nine points. It was a big disappointment for Williams, the team's leading scorer with an average of 16.2 ppg. Brock is another scoring option at 13.6 ppg, though he is shooting only 36.5 percent from the floor.
The Tide got the job done at both ends of the court, shooting 51.7 percent from the field and forcing 21 turnovers in a rout of Alabama A&M over the weekend. Alabama also had its way down low, dominating the boards, 42-27, and outscored Alabama A&M, 40-22, in the paint. Senario Hillman led a balanced attack with 15 points and six boards, while Tony Mitchell notched a double- double of 12 points and 15 rebounds. It marked the first game without leading scorer JaMychal Green, who was suspended indefinitely for conduct detrimental to the team. Mitchell is now the team's top scoring option (12.8 ppg) as well as rebounder (8.5 rpg), and Hillman follows with 11.3 ppg and 4.3 rpg. Trevor Releford is another threat for the Tide, as he turns in 10.3 ppg and 3.3 apg.
Alabama has the edge hosting tonight's bout and its ability to dominate down low will make the biggest difference in a win over USA.
