V-C-U (4-1) at South Florida (4-3)

GAME NOTES: The VCU Rams visit the Sun Dome tonight to take on the South Florida Bulls in a non-league matchup.

VCU moved to 4-1 on the season after splitting a pair of games in last week's NIT Season Tip-Off at Madison Square Garden. The Rams rebounded from a five- point loss to Tennessee in the opener with an 89-85 triumph over UCLA on Friday. Following tonight's tilt, they'll open their Colonial Athletic Association schedule against William & Mary this Saturday, in what will just the Rams' second home game of the season.

USF wrapped up the South Padre Invitational with a 3-1 mark, with the lone setback coming in double overtime against BYU last Friday. The next day, the Bulls responded with a 64-61 win over Texas Tech to close out the tournament. The Bulls will follow tonight's contest with a road game at Florida Atlantic on Saturday before getting an eight-day break in the schedule.

VCU owns a 24-11 edge in the all-time series with USF, although these teams have not met since the 1994-95 campaign.

Senior forward Jamie Skeen this week became the third straight Ram to earn CAA Player of the Week honors, the first time that has happened at VCU in the last 10 years. Bradford Burgess (11/22) and Joey Rodriguez (11/25) were the previous winners. Skeen averaged 17.5 points and 11.5 rebounds during in two games during last week's NIT Season Tip-Off. He scored a game-high 23 against UCLA while also leading the Rams with nine boards. VCU forced 21 turnovers in that contest and put a long-range assault on the Bruins, connecting on 10- of-22 (.455) attempts from beyond the arc. Senior guard Brandon Rozzell paces the Rams with 16.0 ppg on the season. Skeen (8.6 rpg) and Burgess (5.4 rpg) are each scoring 15.0 ppg, while Rodriguez is contributing 14.8 ppg. This game will be a homecoming for senior guard Ed Nixon (6.6 ppg), who grew up less than 20 minutes from the USF Sun Dome.

Leading the way for USF is Augustus Gilchrist, who is tallying 11.3 ppg to go along with 6.1 rebounds. Jawanza Poland is next in line with 11.1 ppg, while Ron Anderson Jr. is scoring 10.1 ppg. Anderson has come off the bench for all but two games so far, and he has provided a major spark with a team-best 7.4 rebounds per game. He is also shooting 66.7 percent from the field and 82.1 percent from the foul line. He has helped USF to a +5.9 rebounding advantage on the year, although the team is a -5.7 in the turnover department. Against Texas Tech on Saturday, Anderson led five players in double figures with a game-high 16 points on 5-of-6 shooting from the floor and a perfect 6-of-6 from the charity stripe. He and fellow reserve Shaun Noriega headlined a 29-11 advantage in bench points for the Bulls. USF played strong defense throughout, holding the Red Raiders to 35.1-percent shooting for the game.

VCU has been a perennial powerhouse in the CAA, while USF faces some of the stiffest competition around in the Big East. This should be a good litmus test for both squads, but the Bulls will need to do a better job taking care of the basketball if they are to earn the victory.
