GAME NOTES: The Davidson Wildcats will try to take care of the foundering Bulldogs from The Citadel tonight, as the two clash in a Southern Conference matchup from McAlister Fieldhouse in Charleston, South Carolina.
Davidson cruised to an 80-51 home win when these teams met on January 21, extending its lead in the all-time series to 93-45.
Davidson has won 11 of its last 12 outings entering tonight's tilt, as the team enjoys a three-game cushion atop the SoCon South Division standings. So far, the Wildcats have won the first three games in a stretch that will see them play five times in 10 days. They routed Wofford on Monday night, 76-54.
Meanwhile, The Citadel has suffered eight consecutive losses since its last victory more than a month ago. The Bulldogs fought hard at Elon last Saturday but were ultimately dealt a 71-66 loss. They have posted just four victories on the season, with only two of those coming against Division I competition.
Davidson used a 21-1 first-half run on Monday night to build a 32-15 lead at intermission. Wofford made only seven field goals in the opening frame (.269), as the Wildcats scored 15 straight points over a span of nearly seven minutes. Davidson went on to hold a 40-33 rebounding advantage for the game and also took care of business from three-point range, making 7-of-14 attempts. The Cats finished with 15 assists and only six turnovers. For the 11th time this season, the team placed at least four players in double figures. J.P. Kuhlman led the way with 14 points, while De'Mon Brooks scored 13, and Jake Cohen and Chris Czerapowicz finished with 12 apiece. Head coach Bob McKillop has gone with the same starting lineup for every game this season, and the results speak for themselves as that continuity has clearly paid dividends. Brooks is shooting a team-best 52.5 percent from the floor and is Davidson's top scorer (15.2 ppg) and rebounder (6.3 rpg). Cohen is not far behind in any of those departments, as he is averaging 13.7 points and 6.1 boards behind 49 percent shooting from the floor. He is also an 89.1 percent shooter at the foul line (98-of-110). Cochran (11.5 ppg) and Kuhlman (11.4 ppg) are also shooting above 80 percent from the charity stripe, which has served the Wildcats well toward the end of close games.
Whereas Davidson boasts a deep scoring cast, The Citadel relies heavily on center Mike Groselle, the team's only double-digit scorer with an average of 17.3 ppg. Groselle entered the week as the conference's top rebounder (9.5 rpg), and he is just a tenth of a point behind UNC Greensboro's Trevis Simpson for the SoCon scoring lead. A 58 percent shooter from the floor, Groselle has attempted 100 more field goals than any of his teammates. However, his scoring output is more than double that of second-leading scorer DeVontae Wright (8.5 ppg), and that lack of scoring balance has played a big part in the team's dismal 4-19 record. Additionally, the Bulldogs have not helped themselves at the defensive end, as they are allowing foes to shoot 49 percent from the floor and are -8.6 in scoring margin. Groselle got some help last Saturday night, as teammate Lawrence Miller buried a career-best five three-pointers en route to a team-high 15 points, the first time in his career he has reached double figures in consecutive games. Groselle finished with 14 points and eight boards, but the Bulldogs simply had no answer for Elon's Jack Isenbarger, who scored 34 points on 11-of-16 shooting.
While these teams are clearly at opposite ends of the spectrum, the Bulldogs can try and salvage a lost season by putting up a fight against the SoCon's top team in front of their home crowd. But even if they bring their A-game, in the end Davidson simply has too many weapons to drop this one.

Where the players come to play and STAY.
