GAME NOTES: The sixth-place tie in the Pac 12 Conference standings will be broken tonight as the Stanford Cardinal head to the City of Angels to take on the UCLA Bruins.
This will be the second encounter of the season and 227th meeting in history between the Cardinal and UCLA. The Bruins hold a 155-91 lead in the series after Stanford's 60-59 victory earlier this season. UCLA outshot the Cardinal and had less turnovers in the initial meeting on Dec. 29th, 2011, but Stanford won the rebounding battle and rejected a shot at the buzzer to hang on for the one-point decision.
Stanford was tied for the Pac-12 lead in mid January, but since has dropped four of its last five to fall into a tie for sixth place. The Cardinal have averaged just 60.4 ppg on 36.9 percent shooting from the field and 24 percent shooting from beyond the arc over that span. Head coach Johnny Dawkins saw his team's offensive struggles its last time out as it fell 56-43 to Arizona. The loss left Stanford with a 16-7 overall record and a 6-5 mark in league action. The Cardinal will need to bounce back from their season-low shooting performance of 25.4 percent it submitted against the Wildcats.
The trio of Josh Owens, Chasson Randle, and Aaron Bright are vital ingredients to Stanford's success. Owens is a traditional inside banging big man. His punishing play has given him team-best averages of 12.6 points and 6.2 rebounds per contest. Randle and Bright both contribute 11.9 points per game. The guard duo combined to score 20 of the team's 43 points against Arizona on Saturday. Anthony Brown and Josh Huestis are both regular contributors for the Cardinal as well.
After a miserable start to the season, UCLA has recovered to arrive at a 13-10 overall record and an identical 6-5 conference mark. Head coach Ben Howland led his team to a 63-60 triumph over Washington State its last time out. The Bruins used their frontcourt size to frustrate the Cougars' star forward Brock Motum. An identical approach will be utilized against Stanford's Owens. The Bruins have outscored their league rivals by an average of 5.5 ppg so far.
Lazeric Jones paces UCLA with 13.3 ppg and 4.4 apg. Jones went 5-of-11 from the floor to score 15 points to the team's win over Washington State his last time out. Joshua Smith was excellent in his last two contests, as he scored 24 points versus Washington and 19 against Washington State. Smith, along with the Wear Twins, give the Bruins one of the best front lines in the league.
The Bruins are playing very well and will need to get as high a seed as possible for the Pac 12 Conference Tournament, as winning that will be their only hope of going dancing. Stanford's offensive struggles will not be cured easily. The Cardinal will need to connect from the outside to turn things around tonight.
