GAME NOTES: The Tennessee-Martin Skyhawks try for the 13th time to register their first Ohio Valley Conference win when they travel to Cape Girardeau to take on the Southeast Missouri State Redhawks tonight at the Show Me Center.
UT-Martin has just three wins on the season and has lost 17 of its last 18 games since beating UAB way back on November 27. The Skyhawks extended their current losing streak to 13 games after dropping a 65-58 decision to nationally-ranked and undefeated Murray State last Saturday.
SEMO has enjoyed mild success this season, winning 12 games overall and it currently sits in fourth place in the OVC standings with a 7-4 record. The Redhawks have hit a rough patch of late however, losing three of their last five bouts, including a 75-72 defeat at the hands of Tennessee State last Saturday.
SEMO took the first meeting between these two teams on January 5, 73-71, on a layup by Marcus Brister with 10 seconds left in the game and now lead the all- time series 41-26 as a result. UTM has won just five of the 33 matchups in Cape Girardeau over the years.
UT-Martin has the worst record in the OVC behind a combination of its 10th- ranked offense (63.2 ppg, .423 field goal percentage) and its league-worst defense (74.6 ppg, .507 field goal percentage defense). The Skyhawks actually put together one of their finest defensive performances of the year against high-powered Murray State last Saturday, holding the Racers to just 42.4 percent shooting overall and 3-of-17 from three-point range. Unfortunately for UTM, the offense could not capitalize, draining just 34.8 percent of its total shots, which included a dismal 2-of-15 effort from beyond the arc. Dane Smith had a career night in the setback, tallying 24 points on 9-of-17 shooting from the field while grabbing 11 rebounds for his second double-double of the season. Mike Liabo ranks in the top-10 in the OVC in scoring (14.9 ppg), but connects on a sub par 34.3 percent of his field goal attempts. Myles Taylor adds 12.8 ppg and 4.9 rpg to the mix. UTM is not much of a threat from beyond the arc, hitting a meager 4.1 three per game at a 28.8 percent clip.
SEMO has the league's third-best scoring offense (70.8 ppg) and best field goal percentage (.488). Though the Redhawks puts a 72 spot on the board in last Saturday's game, they shot just 40.9 percent from the field and watched an eight-point lead with nine minutes to play disappear as they fell to Tennessee State. Marland Smith and Corey Wilford each scored 16 points in the loss, and Leon Powell finished with 13 points and 10 rebounds in recording his sixth double-double of the season. SEMO's offensive attack in typically led by Tyler Stone, who ranks in the top-10 in the OVC in scoring (14.6 ppg), field goal percentage (.540) and rebounding (7.2 rpg). Smith (12.3 ppg) and Powell (11.6 ppg) also chip in to the balanced offense, with Powell shooting field goals at the highest efficiency in the league (.645). Powell also contributes to the league's best rebounding effort with 7.3 rpg, which ranks him third. SEMO's downfall has been giveaways, sporting a league-worst -2.91 turnover margin.
Though it showed some promise at the defensive end in a home game against mighty Murray State, UTM has little hope in keeping pace with the high-powered Redhawks tonight on the road.
