GAME NOTES: The Miami-Florida Hurricanes will look to continue their success as they return home to host the Virginia Tech Hokies for Atlantic Coast Conference action at the BankUnited Center.
This will be the only scheduled encounter of the season and 21st in history between the Hokies and Hurricanes. The series is tied up 10-10 after Virginia Tech won last year's contest 72-68.
The Hokies were able to hang on for a 67-65 decision over the Clemson Tigers to improve to 13-10 overall. Virginia Tech played very well on the defensive end as it held Clemson to 37.9 percent shooting, including 11.8 percent shooting from beyond the arc. Head coach Seth Green has led his team to a misleading 2-6 record in ACC action so far, as Virginia Tech could easily be 6-2 as four of its conference losses were by four points or less. The Hokies picked up their first ACC win on the road versus the nationally ranked Virginia Cavaliers, but lost their next road to Maryland. The Hokies have outscored their opponents by an average margin of 5.4 ppg this year.
Virginia Tech is led by its point guard Erick Green. The junior floor general leads the team with 15.7 ppg and has scored in double figures in 24 straight games, dating back to last season. Dorenzo Hudson is the second leading scorer on the team with an average of 11.4 ppg after he scored six points in each of his last two outings. Dorian Finney-Smith is the team's top rebounder with 7.0 boards per game. Finney-Smith came out of his slump with 12 points and eight rebounds in the win over Clemson.
One thing is for certain, a Jim Larranaga coached team should never be underestimated. Larranaga led his Hurricanes to a 78-74 overtime upset of the Duke Blue Devils at Cameron Indoor Stadium on Sunday which made their record 14-7 and 5-3 in the league. The victory was the fourth in a row for Miami, which held the extremely talented Blue Devils under 40 percent shooting to pick up the victory. The Hurricanes are two games back of the top spot in the ACC standings.
Miami was able to take down the Blue Devils due to an outstanding performance by junior Reggie Johnson. The center overpowered opponents on his way to a career-high 27 points and also reeled in 12 rebounds. Johnson excelled while Durant Scott, the teams leading scorer (13.1), went 3-of-12 from the floor. Junior forward Kenny Kadji returned to the lineup after missing a game with a head injury. Kadji provided 15 points and eight rebounds versus Duke. Malcolm Grant is a solid contributor for Miami with 12.7 ppg.
Despite Virginia Tech's recent upset of Virginia on the road, it is hard to see the Hurricanes folding after their emotional victory in Durham. If Johnson continues to dominate inside, Miami has a chance to make a big-time run not only in the ACC Tournament, but also after that.

Where the players come to play and STAY.
