GAME NOTES: The Iowa State Cyclones will try to sweep the season series with Texas Tech tonight, as they are set to host the Red Raiders in a Big 12 Conference clash from Hilton Coliseum.
Iowa State cruised to a 76-52 victory when these teams met up a month ago in Lubbock. Texas Tech leads the all-time series, 10-8.
Texas Tech has been on the losing end in 13 of its last 14 contests dating back to the beginning of January when Big 12 play began. In addition to their struggles against conference foes, the Red Raiders have posted only one victory in 13 tries outside of Lubbock this season. The latest of those setbacks came at fourth-ranked Kansas this past Saturday in an 83-50 final.
While TTU has struggled mightily on the road, Iowa State has won 14 of 16 in its home building and currently sits in fourth place in conference play, behind nationally-ranked teams Missouri, Kansas and Baylor. The Cyclones have won five of their last seven matchups overall. Most recently, they notched an 80-69 triumph over Oklahoma on Saturday.
Texas Tech made only seven field goals in the first half of Saturday's contest and trailed Kansas 44-22 at the break. There would be no second-half rally for the Red Raiders, who allowed KU to shoot 56 percent for the game, including a 9-of-15 effort from beyond the arc. The Red Raiders were also out-rebounded by 11 and committed 20 turnovers, which the Jayhawks turned into 24 points. Javarez Willis scored a team-high 17 points in the loss, while Jordan Tolbert added 12 points, and Ty Nurse finished with 11. Finding consistent offensive production has been a season-long challenge for the Red Raiders, who are putting up only 59.8 points per game. Tolbert is shooting 52.2 percent from the floor and leads the squad with 11.4 points and 5.8 rebounds per contest, but he is also TTU's only player averaging double figures. Wasted possessions continue to be a trend, as the Red Raiders are committing 17.0 turnovers per tilt (-4.3). For a team without a deep cast of scorers, it has proven increasingly difficult to win in spite of such a high number of turnovers.
Iowa State has performed much more admirably in that department, committing only 12.6 turnovers per contest. Perhaps not so surprisingly, the Cyclones are registering a healthy 73.6 ppg. They are lethal from the perimeter, tallying nearly nine threes per game behind an impressive 38.4 shooting percentage as a team. They also take care of business on the boards and are +4.4 in rebounding margin. Royce White is averaging a team-best 12.9 points and 9.1 rebounds, while guards Chris Allen (12.5 ppg) and Scott Christopherson (11.3 ppg) have combined for 110 threes at a 41-percent clip. ISU has gotten additional long- range contributions from guys like Tyrus McGee (45-of-107) and Chris Babb (57- of-163). Against Oklahoma over the weekend, ISU shot a healthy 52 percent from the floor and 50 percent from the perimeter (11-of-22). The Cyclones also held a 40-28 rebounding advantage, thanks largely to Melvin Ejim's 14-rebound effort to go along with his 10 points. Christopherson buried 5-of-8 threes en route to a game-high 25 points to pace four Cyclones in double figures.
As long as they can avoid the proverbial letdown game against a lesser opponent, the Cyclones should be able to ride their shooting touch to a rather easy win at home.

Where the players come to play and STAY.
