Final Score: Connecticut 65 - Villanova 67
Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Scottie Reynolds' high-arching layup over the outstretched arms of 7-foot-3 Huskies big man Hasheem Thabeet gave the Wildcats a four-point lead late, and Villanova hung on to boost its at-large resume and snap 13th-ranked Connecticut's 10-game win streak, 67-65, at the Wachovia Center.
Reynolds, who joined Corey Stokes with a team-high 18 points, took the basketball right at UConn's menace, scoring off the glass for a 66-62 lead with 38.7 ticks to go.
Craig Austrie straddled the three-point arc on the next possession, draining a long two-point jumper to cut the deficit to 66-64. Austrie made 3-of-9 field goals as part of an eight-point, three-rebound performance.
What followed typified Villanova's wild ride through the season, which has included questionable calls that resulted in losses to North Carolina State and Georgetown.
It came down to the wire, as Antonio Pena missed the front end of a 1-and-1 with 21.2 seconds left. A.J. Price, who led the Huskies (21-6, 10-4 Big East) with 16 points, missed a runner, but Thabeet grabbed the rebound underneath the basket.
Instead of going up strong with a significant height advantage, Thabeet kicked the basketball out to Austrie, who drew no iron on a long three. The bad misfire served as a pass to Price, who was stationed underneath the basket and drew the foul with 6.4 seconds left.
The 75-percent foul shooter missed the first and made the second for a 66-65 game. Dante Cunningham, who scored nine points with five rebounds, missed the front end of his 1-and-1, but a loose ball rebound came right back to the shooter and he again was fouled with 2.3 second left.
He made the first the second time around, but rattled out the second attempt. Price's three-quarter-court heave at the horn missed wide and short, allowing the Wildcats (17-9, 7-7) to escape.
Pena scored 10 points, while Reynolds and Stokes combined to make 8-of-15 three-pointers in the victory. Villanova has won two straight after a 1-6 stretch over the last month.
Stanley Robinson and Jeff Adrien each posted 15 points for the Huskies, who had moved from a middle-of-the-road conference club to the top of the Big East over its 10-game winning streak.
Most of the first half was a shooting nightmare for the Huskies. Villanova jumped out to a 15-5 lead on Corey Fisher's free throw and Stokes' three kept the 10-point edge at 23-13.
He again drained a triple for a 28-15 edge with 5:51 to play, and UConn started the game 5-of-22 from the field.
The Wildcats didn't score in the half's final three minutes, as the Huskies reeled off nine straight points capped by two Robinson free throws for a 33-27 contest after 20 minutes.
