New Rochelle, NY (Sports Network) - Alejo Rodriguez registered a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds as he led the Iona Gaels to a 72-53 win over the Canisius Golden Griffins in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play at the Hynes Athletics Center.

The only other player to score in double figures for the Gaels (17-6, 9-3 MAAC) was Mike McFadden with 12 points as the team won its eighth straight outing and remained alone in second place in the conference standings behind only Siena.

The Golden Griffs (11-12, 6-6) were paced by Elton Frazier, Frank Turner and Julius Coles, all of whom scored 11 points, while the former accounted for a team-best nine rebounds as well in the second loss in the last three games for Canisius.

The Griffs led by as many as seven points just over three minutes into the first half, but the squad eventually finished the period shooting just 36 percent from the floor, leaving them with a 38-24 deficit at the break.

In the second half Iona pulled away with not only 52 percent shooting from the field, but also 6-of-11 behind the three-point line, en route to the 19-point triumph.

In addition to shooting only 38.8 percent from the floor on the night, Canisius also turned the ball over 21 times, miscues that led to 19 points for the Gaels on their home court.
