Final Score: Seton Hall 71 - Villanova 81
Villanova, PA (Sports Network) - Scottie Reynolds poured in 15 points and surpassed 2,000 points for his career in the process, as the second-ranked Villanova Wildcats used a late surge to defeat the Seton Hall Pirates, 81-71, in a Big East clash at The Pavilion.
Reynolds now has 2,008 points for his career and is just the eighth player in school history to notch more than 2,000 career points. Reynolds also had five assists and four rebounds on Tuesday.
"He is an amazing player," Villanova head coach Jay Wright said of Reynolds. "He has impacted all of us, he's impacted me as a coach, he's impacted all of his teammates, this basketball program, this university. He is an amazing guy."
Antonio Pena ended with 16 points and eight rebounds for the Wildcats (20-1, 9-0 Big East), who have ripped off 11 straight victories. Corey Fisher donated 12 points while Corey Stokes had 11 points and five boards for Villanova, which has won 36 straight at The Pavilion.
Jeremy Hazell made six three-pointers on his way to 32 points for the Pirates (12-8, 3-6), who have dropped two in a row following a two-game winning streak. Jeff Robinson and Eugene Harvey each chipped in nine points in defeat.
With the score tied at 62-62 near the midway point of the second half, Villanova put together a 19-6 run to essentially put the game away. Stokes made a pair of three-pointers to begin the flurry, which Reynolds capped off with two free throws for a 81-68 lead with three minutes to play.
The Pirates scored the final three points of the contest to account for the final margin.
"We just feel like if we keep grinding and keep grinding - it doesn't have to be pretty - and some way...Tonight we did a great job on the offensive glass," Wright said. "We have the ability with some lineups to be really good on the offensive glass. With some lineups we're not. Tonight we did a good job getting ourselves extra possessions."
Trailing 16-15 with less than 14 minutes to play in the first half, the Wildcats went on a 13-3 run. Pena made a pair of layups to start the burst, which Dominic Cheek ended with a layup to give Villanova a 28-19 lead with under 10 minutes left until the half.
The Wildcats held a 41-34 margin at the break.
Seton Hall scored the first seven points of the second half to tie the contest. Hazell's three-pointer just a minute in deadlocked things at 41.
"Obviously there is a reason that they are second in the country and won 11 in a row, or whatever it is," Seton Hall head coach Bobby Gonzalez said. "We did battle, we fought hard. I liked our effort. We just didn't make shots and it really hurt us."
