Cullowhee, NC (Sports Network) - Donald Sims scored a game-high 29 points to lead the Appalachian State Mountaineers to an 89-77 win over the Western Carolina Catamounts in a Southern Conference tilt at the Ramsey Center.
Isaac Butts also added 14 points and nine rebounds for the Mountaineers (13-10, 7-4 SoCon), while Josh Hunter and Marcus Wright chipped in with 10 points apiece.
Western Carolina (18-6, 8-4) was paced by Brandon Giles and Jake Robinson, who scored 19 points apiece in a losing effort. Harouna Mutombo also got involved, netting 15 points, while Mike Williams scored 11 points for the Catamounts.
Appalachian State got off to fast start, shooting 54.2 percent from the floor in the first half to take a 36-34 lead at the break.
The Mountaineers kept the pressure on in the second stanza, knocking down 15- of-18 free-throws en route to a 12-point victory.
Foul shooting proved to be the difference in this contest, as ASU outscored the Catamounts 24-7 from the charity stripe.
