NCAA Game Summary - Canisius at Saint Peter's

Final Score: Canisius 72 - Saint Peters 73

Jersey City, NJ (Sports Network) - A free throw by Wesley Jenkins with 10.9 seconds remaining in overtime proved to be the difference as the Saint Peter's Peacocks squeezed out a 73-72 win over the Canisius Golden Griffins in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference clash at the Yanitelli Center.

Jenkins finished the day with a game-high 25 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and handed out four assists for the Peacocks (14-10, 9-5 MAAC) as they won for the second time in the last three outings. Also registering a double-double for the home team was Darius Conley with 11 points and 10 boards, while Nick Leon contributed 16 points on just 6-of-17 shooting from the floor.

The Golden Griffins (11-14, 6-8), who were playing in their fourth overtime game of the season, were led by Frank Turner with his 23 points, 11 rebounds and four assists before fouling out in overtime. Tomas Vazquez-Simmons chipped in 16 points and Julius Coles 10 and seven boards in the team's third straight loss.

Neither team shot the ball well from the field in the first half, but with just 25 percent accuracy from the floor and 1-of-11 beyond the arc in the frame, Canisius was left with the 31-24 deficit at the break.

In the second half the Peacocks opened the door by making just 5-of-16 shots at the charity stripe and 37.9 percent from the field in the frame.

Trailing by two points in the waning moments, Turner ran the floor and made his way to the rim for a game-tying layup with 1.2 seconds remaining to send the game to overtime locked at 62-62.

In the extra period the lead went back and forth and Jenkins put the home team ahead by three at 73-70 when he sank one of two attempts at the charity stripe. With time winding down at the other end of the floor, Turner appeared to be setting up for a three-point attempt to try and tie the game, but with 2.1 seconds left he was fouled while in the air. However, officials ruled he was not in the act of shooting and was awarded just a pair of free throws.

Turner made the first at the stripe and then looked to be trying to bounce the ball off the backboard and rim so a teammate could have a chance at a rebound and put-back, but his shot banked off the glass and fell through the net, leaving the Griffs with the one-point deficit.

Canisius made good on 24-of-34 shots at the free-throw line on the day, compared to just 12-of-28 by the host team. It didn't help that the Griffs were charged with 22 turnovers though.
