Mt, Pleasant, MI (Sports Network) - Steve McNees scored 16 points as the Akron Zips edged the Central Michigan Chippewas 56-52 in a Mid-American Conference joust.
Jimmy Conyers added 11 points and eight rebounds for the Zips (18-7, 8-3 MAC) who have won five of their last six. Darryl Roberts also scored 11 points, while Zeke Marshall grabbed nine boards.
Jordan Bitzer scored 20 points to lead the Chippewas (11-11, 6-4) who have lost three of their last four. Robbie Harman added 13 points, while William McClure added eight rebounds.
Akron led by six late in the opening half before the Chippewas rallied to tie the game at 27 by halftime. The Zips shot 44.0 percent from the floor in the first stanza.
Central Michigan led 41-30 with 14:05 left in regulation before Akron rallied to tie the game at 52 with 1:08 remaining. McNees hit two foul shots with 31 seconds left to put the Zips in front for good. The Chippewas went without a field goal for the final 2:21.
Akron prevailed despite turning the ball over 17 times.
