Las vegas, NV (Sports Network) - Darington Hobson scored 16 points and grabbed 13 rebounds, as No. 15 New Mexico defeated 23rd-ranked UNLV, 76-66, at the Thomas & Mack Center.

Roman Martinez nailed four three-pointers to also finish with 16 points for the Lobos (22-3, 8-2 MWC), who have won eight straight games since losing at home to UNLV in early January.

Dairese Gary added 15 points and six assists for New Mexico, which moved into sole possession of first place in the Mountain West Conference. New Mexico and UNLV entered Wednesday's game locked in a three-way tie with BYU. The Cougars are idle until Saturday.

Oscar Bellfield had 15 points, while TreVon Willis added 13 with 10 assists and three steals for the Runnin' Rebels (19-5, 7-3), who had a five-game winning streak halted. UNLV trailed throughout the contest.

New Mexico raced out to a 27-12 lead, but a Matt Shaw three-pointer whittled the Rebels' deficit to 31-25 with about 3 1/2 minutes remaining in the opening half. The Lobos closed out the frame on a 9-3 run to settle for a 40-28 advantage at the break.

The visitors led 54-38 early in the second half when Martinez hit a shot from beyond the arc, and Phillip McDonald knocked down a trey to stretch the margin to 61-43. However, UNLV countered with a 20-4 surge to pull within two with under four minutes remaining.

A Hobson tip-in and McDonald three-pointer pushed the lead to 70-63. New Mexico cemented the win at the foul line.
