Iowa City, IA (Sports Network) - Matt Gatens scored 16 points and the Iowa Hawkeyes upended the Northwestern Wildcats, 78-65, in a Big Ten Conference battle at the Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

Devan Bawinkel netted 15 points for Iowa (9-16, 3-9 Big Ten), while receiving 13-point efforts from Aaron Fuller and Jarryd Cole. Fuller also grabbed 11 rebounds to cap off a double-double on the night.

Northwestern (16-8, 5-7) had a game-high 20 points from Michael Thompson, while John Shurna added 16.

Iowa took a 35-22 advantage into the intermission behind 46.2 percent shooting from the floor in the first half.

The Hawkeyes were able to seal the 13-point victory after connecting on 55.0 percent of their field goals in the second stanza.

Iowa was deadly from long range, hitting 12-of-24 attempts on the night.
