Final Score: Louisville 66 - Syracuse 60
Syracuse, NY (Sports Network) - Mike Marra hit a couple clutch three-pointers down the stretch, finishing with 12 points on four shots from beyond the arc, as the Louisville Cardinals stunned second-ranked Syracuse, 66-60, at the Carrier Dome.
Edgar Sosa also scored 12 points and dished out five assists for the Cardinals (16-9, 7-5 Big East), who have won the last five meetings with Syracuse.
Jared Swopshire and Preston Knowles both had 10 points for Louisville, which had lost its last four conference road games.
Wes Johnson had 14 points and eight rebounds for the Orange (24-2, 11-2), who had won 11 straight since losing at home to Pittsburgh on January 2.
The setback drops Syracuse a half-game behind Villanova for first place in the Big East standings.
Syracuse opened the game on a 10-2 run as Louisville struggled to make shots, starting the game 1-of-9 from the field.
A Scoop Jardine layup stretched Syracuse's lead to 22-11 with eight minutes remaining, but the Cardinals closed the half on a 17-7 surge to head to the break down 29-28 after Jardine hit a floater off the glass.
The lead continually changed hands, and a Kris Joseph jumper put the home team in front 50-46 with about 8 1/2 minutes left in the second half.
Louisville, though, scored 13 of the next 15 points, with Marra's three- pointer giving the Cardinals the lead for good at 53-50.
Samardo Samuels capped the surge with a thunderous dunk for a 59-52 Louisville advantage with three minutes to play.
After Joseph and Johnson each made two free throws, Marra knocked down another trey from the left corner to restore a six-point cushion.
Joseph hit two more free throws, and after Sosa missed the front end of a one- and-one, converted a high-percentage slam to whittle the deficit to 62-60 with 31.9 seconds showing on the clock.
Syracuse failed to capitalize on a turnover by Rakeem Buckles, whose bounce pass caught the end line. Johnson made a strong drive to the hoop, but couldn't convert. Jerry Smith came down with the defensive rebound and Joseph was called for an intentional foul with 17.8 seconds remaining.
Smith sank both attempts to make it 64-60. He was quickly fouled again, but missed both free throws. Louisville, though, prevailed when three-point bids from Andy Rautins and Jardine were off the mark.
"The defense was good. We lost the game on the offensive end," said Syracuse head coach Jim Boeheim. "We got some good opportunities and we got some good shots. We didn't convert. I thought we got a little bit frustrated with their defense. They played a tremendous match-up (zone)."
