New Rochelle, NY (Sports Network) - Scott Machado scored a team-best 12 points as the Iona Gaels held off the Loyola-Maryland Greyhounds, 70-62, in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference showdown at the Hynes Athletic Center.
Jonathan Huffman added 11 points off the bench and Trinity Fields 10 in a reserve role as the Gaels (19-9, 11-5 MAAC) won for the second time in the last three outings.
The Greyhounds (12-13, 5-10) were paced by J'hared Hall with 14 points, while Jawaan Wright and Brett Harvey both responded with 13 points as the squad had a two-game win streak snapped.
Iona shot a solid 54.5 percent from the field in the first half, including 5- of-10 behind the three-point line, and along the way made all 11 chances at the free-throw line to register a 40-26 lead at the break.
In the second half the Gaels slipped to only 12-of-20 at the charity stripe and a total of eight field goals, but still the home team played well enough to earn the eight-point win.
In addition to forcing 17 turnovers, Iona also held Loyola to a mere 34 percent shooting from the floor on the afternoon.
