Final Score: Ohio 88 - Akron 91
Akron, OH (Sports Network) - Chris McKnight registered a massive double-double with 25 points and 18 rebounds as he helped guide the Akron Zips to a 91-88 double-overtime win against Bobcats of Ohio University in a Mid-American Conference bout at Rhodes Arena.
Also logging a double-double for the Zips (19-7, 9-3 MAC) in their fourth straight win was Jimmy Conyers with 20 points and 11 rebounds, while Brett McKnight and Anthony Hitchens responded with 14 and 10 points, respectively.
The Bobcats (14-12, 5-7) were paced by D.J. Cooper who tallied a game-high 33 points, cleared seven rebounds, handed out five assists and made three steals as the squad had a two-game win streak snapped. Reggie Keely posted 16 points, as did Armon Bassett, but the former also ripped down a game-high 20 rebounds as well. Before fouling out, De Washington tallied 10 points and eight rebounds, while fellow reserve Asown Sayles cleared 10 rebounds of his own in the setback on the road.
Akron shot 48.1 percent from the field in the first half, but the squad connected on only 2-of-7 behind the three-point line and 6-of-11 at the free- throw line, yet still managed to put up a 34-29 lead at the break.
In the second half the Zips slumped to only 38.7 percent from the floor, opening the door for Ohio to fight back and tie the game at 67-67 and send it into overtime when Cooper converted a jumper with less than 40 seconds remaining in regulation.
In the first overtime the Zips began on an 8-2 run, but down the stretch the Bobcats chipped away and a three-pointer by Tommy Freeman with 10 seconds to play sent the meeting into a second overtime tied at 80-80.
A layup by Conyers kicked off the next bonus session for Akron and the home team never trailed, with Conyers sealing the three-point win with a pair of free throws in the final seconds.
Ohio held a 55-49 rebounding advantage in the meeting and also forced Akron into 16 turnovers, but the visitors could not overcome a lackluster 19-of-36 effort at the charity stripe on the afternoon.
