Laramie, WY (Sports Network) - Jimmer Fredette and Tyler Haws each scored 22 points as 16th- ranked BYU came through with an 85-63 rout of Wyoming.

Jonathan Tavernari drilled a trio of three-pointers and shot 7-of-12 overall to finish with 17 points off the bench for the Cougars (25-3, 10-2 MWC), who won their third game in a row and fifth in the last six games to keep pace with conference-leading New Mexico.

BYU and the Lobos are separated by just a half-game in the standings and meet next weekend in Provo.

Desmar Jackson hit four three-pointers and totaled a career-best 26 points for the Cowboys (9-18, 2-11), who are riding a seven-game losing streak. Djibril Thiam checked in with 12 points and seven boards in the loss.

BYU scored the first 10 points of the game and was out to a 21-13 advantage at the midway point following a three-ball by Tavernari. Another Tavernari three a short time later kept the lead at 13 and the Cougars led 40-28 at the break.

The Cowboys made a push to stay in contention early in the second half beginning with an Amath M'Baye three and Adam Waddell deuce to get within seven.

Fredette came back to stroke a three and BYU was up 14 after Tavernari nailed a jumper with 12 1/2 minutes remaining. Wyoming responded with a 10-4 burst, making it an eight-point game at 59-51 following a Ryan Dermody triple.

Tavernari, though, answered with a three-pointer and Charles Abouo slammed for two on the ensuing Cougar possession to re-establish a 13-point cushion.

"I thought we did a good job of battling back with about 12 minutes to go. We got it to eight points at one point, but then they hit a three out of a timeout and then got a dunk on their next possession and that was pretty much it," said Wyoming head coach Heath Schroyer.

Jackson's three-point play for Wyoming moments later could only cut the margin to 10 and the Cowboys wouldn't hit another field goal for almost seven minutes as BYU won going away.

"We did a much better job in the second half of playing possession to possession. We did a good job offensively and a good job guarding them...down the stretch we did a really good job," remarked BYU head coach Dave Rose.
