Pittsburgh, PA (Sports Network) - Damian Saunders dropped in 20 points, including the go-ahead bucket with 25.8 seconds left, as the Duquesne Dukes edged the Dayton Flyers, 73-71, in an Atlantic 10 Conference bout at the A.J. Palumbo Center in Pittsburgh.
Saunders finished 8-of-17 from the floor with five boards and three steals, as the Dukes (15-12, 6-7 A10) won their third game in a row. Eric Evans tacked on 14 points and four assists, while Bill Clark had 12 points off the bench.
Chris Johnson led Dayton (18-8, 7-5) and all scorers with 21 points on 6-of-13 long-range buckets. Chris Wright added 15 points and six boards, while Paul Williams and Kurt Huelsman chipped in with 12 and 10 points, respectively.
Dayton shot 42.3 percent from the floor and went a perfect 9-of-9 at the foul line in opening half, taking a 33-30 edge to the intermission.
In the second half, Saunders hit a driving layup in traffic to give the Dukes a 72-71 lead with 25.8 seconds left. Johnson tried to respond, but he missed a three-pointer with 13 seconds to go. After Clark made one of two free throws, Johnson had another chance for the Flyers, but he once again came up short on a three-point try at the buzzer.
The Dukes forced Dayton into 21 turnovers and scored 24 points off those giveaways on the day.
