Hattiesburg, MS (Sports Network) - Randy Culpepper scored 17 points as the Texas-El Paso Miners defeated the Southern Miss Golden Eagles, 59-56, in a Conference USA tussle at the Reed Green Coliseum.

Derrick Caracter also netted 17 points in the win for UTEP (21-5, 12-1 CUSA).

Gary Flowers led the way for Southern Miss (16-11, 6-7), scoring 15 points. R.L. Horton netted 11 points, while Angelo Johnson added 10.

The Golden Eagles took a slim 29-28 advantage into the intermission after holding UTEP to just 33.3 percent shooting from the floor in the opening half.

In the second stanza, the Miners held Southern Miss to a poor 29.0 percent mark from the field to claim the win.

Southern Miss mounted an 18-6 run in the final 7:36 of the game, but it wasn't quite enough to win.
