Ypsilanti, MI (Sports Network) - Darryl Lampley led the way with 21 points as the Eastern Michigan Eagles downed the Northern Illinois Huskies, 48-45, in a Mid-American Conference matchup at the Convocation Center.
Derek Thompson added 10 points for the Eagles (12-16, 7-6 MAC).
Abdel Nader and Tony Nixon each finished with 10 points for the Huskies (3-23, 2-11)
Both teams struggled with their shooting at the start of the contest. NIU made just 32 percent of its shots, including just 1-of-10 from three-point range. EMU shot even worse, hitting on only 31.8 percent of its field goal tries, but was somewhat better from long range, making 3-of-8 from beyond the arc. After the offensive troubles from both sides in the first frame, the teams were knotted at 22-22 at the half.
In the second half, the shooting woes continued for both squads. The Huskies made only 28 percent of their field goals, while the Eagles were little better at 31.6 percent. EMU was able to outscore NIU from the free-throw line, 12-6 in the half. The Eagles opened the second half on a 14-2 run to open up a big lead. The Huskies battled back to tie the contest at 39-39 with just over four minutes to play, but were unable to complete the comeback, as the Eagles held on to sweep the season series.
NIU outrebounded EMU 42-28. The Eagles converted 17 Husky turnovers into 18 points.
