Lynx acquire F Thomas

Minneapolis, MN (Sports Network) - The Minnesota Lynx acquired veteran forward LaToya Thomas from the Detroit Shock in exchange for guard Shay Murphy on Sunday.

Thomas, the top overall pick in the 2003 WNBA Draft out of Mississippi State, came into the 2008 season with career averages of 10.4 points and 3.9 rebounds in stints with Cleveland, San Antonio, Los Angeles and Detroit. Her best season came in 2004 with the Silver Stars when she averaged 14.2 points and 4.5 rebounds per contest.

This season, Thomas has averaged just 1.1 points, 0.7 rebounds in seven games with the Shock.

With the trade, the Lynx become the first WNBA team with three No. 1 overall picks on one roster. Minnesota guards Seimone Augustus and Lindsey Harding were also selected at the top of the draft.

"While we are very thankful for all that Shay has done for the Minnesota Lynx organization, we could not pass up the opportunity to acquire a player like LaToya Thomas," said Lynx general manager Roger Griffith. "We are bringing in the top overall pick in the 2003 WNBA Draft, and we feel that LaToya can be a big contributor to this team as we strive to return to the playoffs this season.

"We also believe that Shay can be a solid player in the WNBA, and we really wanted to provide her with an opportunity to show that. She is headed to a great situation in Detroit where she will have the chance to contribute and play."

Murphy, who was selected by Minnesota out of the University of Southern California in the second round of the 2007 WNBA Draft, has played just two games with the Lynx in 2008, tallying two points and two rebounds. In her rookie season, Murphy collected 5.2 points and 3.3 rebounds per game.
