Mystics sign All-Star Katie Smith

Washington, DC (Sports Network) - The Washington Mystics have signed All-Star guard Katie Smith.

Terms of the deal for the seven-time All-Star were not disclosed.

Smith is an 11-year WNBA veteran who has also played for Minnesota and Detroit. Including two seasons with the rival American Basketball League, she is the all-time leading scorer in women's professional basketball with 6,879 points.

"This is a very exciting day for the Washington Mystics organization," said Mystics general manager Angela Taylor. "Katie Smith is the most prolific scorer in U.S. professional women's basketball history and will bring invaluable experience and competitiveness to our roster. She has been a huge success everywhere she's been and as we look to make our vision of bringing a WNBA championship to Washington, DC a reality, we are ecstatic that someone with Katie's pedigree is looking forward to being part of our championship journey."

Smith had played for Detroit since a trade with the Lynx in 2005 and led the Shock to a pair of WNBA titles, capturing the Finals MVP in 2008. She is also a three-time Olympian, helping the United States to gold medals in 2000, 2004 and 2008.

"I am really excited to be joining the Washington Mystics who are hungry for a championship," Smith stated. "I have a tremendous amount of respect for the ownership group, coaches and staff and I feel that the transition will be a smooth one. I also look forward to playing in front of some of the best fans of the WNBA."

Smith averaged 13.7 points and 2.8 assists in 27 games last season. She owns career WNBA averages of 15.7 points, 3.1 rebounds and 2.8 assists in 347 games.

The Mystics also signed restricted free agent guard Kristen Haynie.
