McCoughtry's career game lifts Dream into WNBA Finals

Atlanta, GA (Sports Network) - Angel McCoughtry registered a WNBA playoff- record 42 points, as the Atlanta Dream advanced to the WNBA Finals with a 105-93 win over the New York Liberty at Philips Arena.

McCoughtry made 12-of-20 from the field and converted 17-of-21 free throws for a career-high in points. Coco Miller chipped in with 19 points for Atlanta, which will face the Storm in the best-of-five final series starting on Sunday in Seattle. Erika de Souza donated 15 points off the bench

The Dream, who are in their third season, set a WNBA record with 30 losses two years ago.

Cappie Pondexter had a team-high 36 points to go with nine assists for the Liberty, who got 20 points from Essence Carson in a reserve role.

Atlanta jumped out to a 32-21 lead after the opening 12 minutes and maintained an 11-point margin, 55-44, heading into the intermission.

However, New York cut its deficit to single digits early in the third to make a game of it. Then down 70-63 with 3:38 remaining in the quarter, the Liberty ran off seven straight with Carson capping the surge with a three-point play to even things at with under a minute to play in the third and the teams would be tied at 73-73 heading into the fourth.

With New York ahead, 77-76, with shade over nine minutes to play, the Dream ran off six straight to take the lead for good. McCoughtry made a pair of free throws to put her squad ahead by a point and de Souza followed with a layup. After McCoughtry hit a medium range jumper, Atlanta was up 82-77 with 7:41 left.

New York could only get within three the rest of the way and the hosts made the bulk of their free throws to pull away down the stretch.
