UConn leads top seeds for women's tourney

Mon 14th, March 2011

Indianapolis, IN (Sports Network) - Connecticut, Baylor, Stanford and Tennessee all earned top seeds for the NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament, which begins Saturday at campus sites around the country.

Connecticut (32-1) is the top seed in the Philadelphia Region, and will open play Sunday against America East Champion Hartford (17-15) in Storrs, Connecticut. The Huskies are the favorite to win this tournament, as they have the past two national championships. Connecticut beat Stanford in last year's title game.

UConn's lone defeat this year came at the hands of the Cardinal on December 30. The loss brought Connecticut's historic 90-game winning streak to an end.

"It really doesn't matter. I was just telling the players. It really doesn't. What the seeds are and what number and who's in your bracket - you gotta play whoever you gotta play," UConn head coach Geno Auriemma said. "You're going to have to play some good teams sooner probably rather than later. That's the NCAA Tournament."

The Huskies have won four straight Big East championships and are searching for their eighth national title. Senior Maya Moore is the star for Connecticut, averaging 22.8 points, 7.9 rebounds and 4.3 assists.

Provided Connecticut advances against Hartford, it will face eighth-seeded Kansas State (21-10) or No. 9 Purdue (20-11) in the second round.

Duke (29-3) is the No. 2 seed in the Philadelphia Region, and will face Tenn- Martin (21-10) in Durham, North Carolina. The Blue Devils are making their 17th consecutive and 18th overall trip to the NCAA Tournament.

A victory by Duke in the first round would set up a matchup with seventh- seeded Iowa State (22-10) or No. 10 Marist (30-2).

Stanford (29-2) has received a No. 1 seed for a second consecutive year. The Cardinal are the top seed in the Spokane Region, and play Big West Champion UC Davis (24-8) on Saturday in Stanford, California.

The Pac-10's automatic qualifier following the capture of its eighth Pac-10 Tournament title, and fifth in a row, Stanford is making its 24th consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance.

The Cardinal, who have won two national championships (1990 and 1992), will face eighth-seeded Texas Tech (22-10) or No. 9 St. John's (21-10) if they beat UC Davis.

Xavier (28-2) is the No. 2 seed in the Spokane Region, and will play South Dakota State (19-13) in the first round.

The Lady Bears (31-2) are the top seed in the Dallas Region. Baylor will take on Prairie View (21-11) on Sunday at the Ferrell Center.

The last time the Final Four was in Indianapolis, Baylor won its lone national championship in 2005 as a No. 2 seed.

If Brittney Griner and Baylor can take care of Prairie View, eighth-seeded Houston (26-5) or No. 9 West Virginia (23-9) awaits in the second round.

Texas A&M is the No. 2 seed in the region and will do battle with McNeese State (26-6) in the first round.

Tennessee (31-2) picked up the top seed for the Dayton Region, and will play Stetson (20-12) on Saturday in Knoxville, Tennessee.

The Lady Vols are the most recent champion other than Connecticut, having won titles in 2007 and '08.

If Tennessee advances, they will play No. 8 Marquette (23-8) or ninth-seeded Texas (19-13).

Notre Dame (26-7) is the No. 2 seed in the region, and will open play against Utah (18-16).

The women's Final Four will be held April 3 in Indianapolis, with the national title game taking place April 5.
