Miami, FL (Sports Network) - Bowling legend Don Carter died Thursday night at his home in Miami. He was 85 years old.
According to the Professional Bowlers Association, Carter had recently been hospitalized with pneumonia complicated by emphysema.
Carter was among bowling's top stars in the 1950s and was instrumental in launching the PBA in 1959. He served as the organization's first president and was elected into the American Bowling Congress Hall of Fame in 1970, alongside close friend Dick Weber. The two were also part of the inaugural PBA Hall of Fame class in 1975.
"It is impossible to put into words what Don Carter meant to the PBA and sport of bowling," said PBA commissioner Tom Clark in a statement. "There is no way to fill the void left by his passing. Our deepest sympathies to his wife Paula and his family. He was a pioneer, a champion and will never be forgotten."
Carter was voted Bowler of the Year six times between 1953 and 1962, and won five major championships. He retired in 1972 because of knee problems.
