Montreal, QC (Sports Network) - Quebec native Jean Pascal retained his WBC light heavyweight title with a bloody 11th-round technical decision over Chad Dawson.
Pascal (26-1), who has never lost in the ring as a light heavyweight, built up a dominant lead in the early rounds of the fight. Dawson (29-1) was getting pummeled in the seventh round and was pinned against the ropes in the ninth when the bout was seemingly coming to an end.
Dawson, who held the WBC title in 2007-08, rebounded later in the ninth and was actually dominating Pascal in the 11th, landing a thunderous left uppercut. But with about one minute left in the round, the two fighters bumped heads, which opened a nasty cut above the right eye of Dawson.
The fight doctor looked at Dawson, who deemed the bout couldn't continue, hence being decided on the three scorecards. Pascal won by a score of 108-101 on one of the cards and by a 106-103 margin from the other two judges.
Pascal, who just made his third title defense, could next fight Montreal native Lucian Bute, the current IBF super middleweight champion. He was ringside for Saturday night's bout at Bell Centre.
