Vitali Klitschko to defend WBC title against Shannon Briggs

Hamburg, Germany (Sports Network) - Vitali Klitschko will defend his WBC heavyweight title against Shannon Briggs on October 16.

Klitschko's management group said the fight will take place in the champ's hometown of Hamburg, Germany.

The 39-year-old Klitschko (40-2, 38 KOs) has won eight straight bouts since a loss to Lennox Lewis in 2003 and last fought on May 29, earning a 10th-round knockout of Albert Sosnowski. He has made six successful title defenses since capturing the crown against Corrie Sanders in 2004.

"I am really happy that I will have a fight in Hamburg again, the place where I started my professional career," said Klitschko in a statement. "Shannon Briggs is not only big at talking, but also big in the ring and a very tough challenger. He is more experienced than me, has more professional fights on his record and is one of the hardest punchers in the division."

Briggs (51-5-1, 45 KOs) held the WBO heavyweight crown in 2006 and 2007 before a loss to Sultan Ibragimov. He has won three fights with a no contest in four bouts since that setback, including a first-round TKO of Rob Calloway in May.

"For a long time I have been trying hard to fight a Klitschko," said Briggs with a reference to Vitali's brother Wladimir. "Most of their opponents are scared to death when they step into the ring. I will take the fight to him. Klitschko can enjoy his belt for a few more weeks; after October 16 it will be mine!"

Wladimir Klitschko owns the IBF, WBO and IBO belts. He is scheduled to face former WBC champ Samuel Peter on September 11 in Frankfurt.
