Chavez keeps title by pounding Rubio

San Antonio, TX (Sports Network) - Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. retained his WBC middleweight title with a 12-round unanimous decision over Marco Antonio Rubio Saturday night at the Alamodome.

With his father, Mexico boxing legend Julio Cesar Chavez ringside, the younger Chavez (45-0-1 31 KOs) took control of this bout early and pounded away with body shots in the middle rounds. Rubio (53-6-1, 46 KOs) threw 402 more punches than Chavez, but landed 36 less than the champion.

That led the judges to score the bout 118-110, 116-112, and 115-113 in favor of Chavez, who was successful in his second title defense. He won the crown over Sebastian Zbik lase June and then scored a fifth-round TKO of Peter Manfredo Jr. in November.

In round 11 on Saturday, Rubio landed a right uppercut in the first minute, but couldn't gain momentum. The fighters went toe-to-toe later in the round before Chavez went on the offensive, a familiar story in the fight.

On the undercard, Nonito Donaire won a split decision over Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. to capture the vacant WBO super bantamweight title. Donaire won 117-110 on a pair of scorecards, while losing, 115-112 from the other judge.

In the ninth round, Donaire (28-1, 18 KOs) landed an uppercut followed by a left to the face that floored Vazquez (21-2-1, 18 KOs). Donaire, who is from the Philippines was in his seventh title fight, but was making his debut in this weight class. He held titles at 112 and 118 pounds.
