AFL honors Grieb, Floyd & Kirton in Week 17

Wed 6th, July 2011

Tulsa, OK (Sports Network) - San Jose QB Mark Grieb has been named Russell Athletic Offensive Player of the Week. Arizona DB Marquis Floyd and Chicago FB Johnie Kirton have been named Riddell Defensive Player of the Week and JLS Ironman of the Week, respectively, for Week 17 of the 2011 AFL season. In addition to these three awards, the AFL is also awarding the best catch of the week, the playmaker of the week and the highlight of the week. The Cutters Catch of the Week award winner for Week 17 is WR Jamarko Simmons of the Jacksonville Sharks, while the NiFTy Playmaker of the Week is Orlando WR Josh Bush. The Spalding Highlight of the Week award winner is Orlando WR Chris Duvalt.

Grieb (6-2, 200, UC-Davis) lifted the SaberCats out of a seven game slump while defeating the top team in the League, Jacksonville Sharks, 83-70. Grieb completed 32-of-48 passes for 401-yards and nine touchdowns in the win, while also rushing for a score. The 11-year veteran ranks second in the League in passing average per game (292.4) and total offense average (294.1) this season. The 83-points by the SaberCats offense marks the highest points scored this season by any team.

Floyd (6-0, 195, West Georgia) turned in two of the four interceptions that Spokane's quarterback Erik Meyer threw in the Rattlers' 68-46 victory over the Shock. Both interceptions led to touchdowns by Arizona's offense, allowing the Rattlers to keep the lead throughout the game. Floyd now ranks fifth in the League in interceptions with nine this season. Floyd finished the night with two pass breakups and eight tackles to go along with his two picks.

Kirton (6-3, 285, Washington) threatened the Blaze's offense and defense in the win over Utah, securing Chicago a playoff spot with the victory. Kirton contributed three rushing touchdowns on nine carries and 46-yards. Kirton also notched two tackles and assisted on a tackle for a loss. Kirton ranks third in the League in rushing yards, averaging 22.0 yards per game.

Simmons (6-3, 235, Western Michigan) displayed full extension on an Aarons Garcia pass on a post pattern in the endzone. Simmons nearly jumped over the boards before toppling over the wall against San Jose in the final minutes of the fourth quarter. Simmons finished the night with six catches for 65-yard and three touchdowns.

Bush (5-9, 165, Western Michigan) wreaked havoc in both the receiving and kick return game in Orlando's win against Pittsburgh, 62-54, on Friday. In the win, Bush recorded seven receptions for 68-yards and a touchdown. He also notched 120 kick return yards and a touchdown. Bush has been a triple threat all season in the receiving, rushing and kick return game, keeping Orlando in the hunt for the playoffs.

Duvalt (5-11, 175, Illinois) tallied two consecutive kickoff returns off the net for touchdowns in the third quarter for Orlando. Duvalt, who was recently activated off of injured reserve list, gave the Predators their first lead of the game, 41-40, with nine minutes to go in the third. His second touchdown gave the Predators a cushion putting them up by eight.
