Montreal stops B.C. as time expires to earn victory

Fri 29th, August 2008

Montreal, QC (Sports Network) - Avon Cobourne rushed for 100 yards and one touchdown on 16 carries and Montreal made a defensive stand as time expired to lock up a 30-25 win over British Columbia in Week 10 action from Molson Stadium.

Anthony Calvillo threw for 231 yards and a score on 20-of-35 passes for the Alouettes (6-3), who have won four in a row.

Buck Pierce completed 38-of-48 passes for 406 yards, throwing two touchdowns and two interceptions for the Lions (4-5), who have dropped three of four. Geroy Simon hauled in eight passes for a game-high 133 yards in the loss.

In a thrilling final quarter, Montreal assumed a 22-17 edge when Calvillo found Jamel Richardson for a 24-yard strike.

The Lions then forged ahead as Pierce found Rufus Skillern deep in the right side of the end zone for a 19-yard touchdown. B.C. added a two-point conversion to make it 25-22.

Adrian McPherson's one-yard run for a score with less than 90 seconds to play put the Als back ahead 29-25, and Damon Duval's single on the ensuing kickoff made it a five-point contest.

Pierce led his club downfield, eventually setting up shop inside 15 seconds to go at the one when Stefan Logan caught a pass and fell just short of the goal line. On the play, the ball was fumbled forward and picked up in the end zone -- an illegal touch -- but the Lions maintained possession at the one.

Two more offside penalties on the Alouettes as time expired gave the Lions two more shots to score. On the first, Pierce tried a sneak up the middle but was stopped. A second rushing play faltered, then a false start call on B.C. on the fumbled last snap finally ended the contest in Montreal's favor.

Montreal led by 8-0 after one quarter on a two-yard run by Cobourne and a Duval single and convert.

The Lions recovered in the second, going up 10-8 on Paul McCallum's 35-yard make plus Pierce's eight-yard TD pass to Kahlil Hill.

However, Montreal took a 15-10 lead to the break after another single by Duval, along with successful conversions of 18-and-37-yard field goals.

B.C. once again assumed the lead when Pierce tucked the ball under his arm and rolled into the end zone for a four-yard TD run which put the visitors up 17-15 after three.
