Calgary moves into first with rout of Saskatchewan

Mon 13th, October 2008

Calgary, AB (Sports Network) - Henry Burris threw for three touchdowns as the Calgary Stampeders crushed the Saskatchewan Roughriders, 42-5, to take sole possession of first place in the West Division.

Nik Lewis, Jeremaine Copeland and Ken-Yon Rambo each caught a touchdown pass for the Stampeders (10-5), who lost 10 days ago to the Roughriders at Saskatchewan, but avenged the loss in blowout fashion. Edmonton, Saskatchewan and British Columbia each own a 9-6 record.

Burris completed 14-of-28 passes for 304 yards, while Demetris Summers ran for a TD for Calgary and Sandro DeAngelis added four field goals. Lewis totaled five catches for 135 yards.

Luca Congi accounted for the Roughriders' points with a field goal, and Saskatchewan added a pair of singles in the loss.

Roughriders quarterback Michael Bishop threw for 298 yards on 17-of-33 completions but was intercepted three times. Saskatchewan didn't have much of a ground game, as Neal Hughes was the leading rusher with 26 yards on five carries.

The Stampeders started the rout early, as Burris connected with Rambo for an 81-yard score less than five minutes into the game. Burris pump faked and a defender pulled off coverage of Rambo, who caught the ball in open space and ran in for a score.

A 43-yard field goal from DeAngelis later in the first, and a single for Saskatchewan made it a 10-1 game after the opening stanza.

In the second quarter, DeAngelis had field goals of 46 and nine yards. They surrounded another Calgary touchdown, where Burris found Copeland in the right side of the end zone from 18 yards out.

Congi's 51-yarder provided the Roughriders' only points of the quarter, and Calgary went into halftime with a 21-4 advantage.

Field goals of 43 and 16 yards from DeAngelis increased the Stampeders' lead, and another Saskatchewan single made it a 27-4 game headed into the fourth.

An 85-yard TD pass from Burris to Lewis started the fourth-quarter scoring for Calgary, and Summers added a six-yard scoring dash. A single for the home team completed the scoring.
