DeAngelis' late FG lifts playoff-bound Stampeders past Lions

Sat 31st, October 2009

Vancouver, BC (Sports Network) - Sandro DeAngelis' 27-yard field goal with time expiring lifted Calgary to a 28-26 win over British Columbia, and secured a home playoff game for the Stampeders.

Henry Burris threw for 306 yards and a touchdown on 17-of-31 passing for Calgary (10-6-1), which leads the Western Division and has won two in a row since playing to a tie with Saskatchewan on October 17.

Burris also ran for two scores, while Romby Bryant had four catches for 129 yards in the victory. Joffrey Reynolds added 102 yards on the ground on 14 carries.

Casey Printers completed 22-of-35 passes for 337 yards, a score and an interception for British Columbia (8-9), which has dropped two straight. Paris Jackson had a touchdown reception among his three catches for 91 yards, while A.J. Harris ran for a score in the setback.

After the Lions had taken a one-point lead with 1 1/2 minutes left, Calgary started at its own 35 and picked up a pair of first downs on two straight passes to Jeremaine Copeland. Burris fumbled on the next play, but recovered, then found Copeland again for 14 yards and another first down.

Reynolds ran for 29 yards to the BC 10, as half a minute was left on the clock. Burris took a knee, and DeAngelis' first attempt from 23 yards away with 11 seconds left was negated, as Calgary was penalized for improper procedure. But after backing up, he drilled the 27-yard attempt to give the Stamps the win.

Harris' one-yard run got BC on the board less than four minutes into the first quarter, and a 43-yard field goal from Paul McCallum made it a 10-0 game.

Calgary got its first points late in the opening frame, when Burris completed a 28-yard pass to Rob Cote to set up his own one-yard run.

The Stampeders went on top four minutes into the second quarter, when Burris found Nik Lewis for a five-yard TD. But BC countered with a 26-yarder from McCallum, and after Calgary tacked on a single, McCallum drilled a 38-yarder just before the break to give the Lions a 16-15 edge.

The teams mostly punted in the third quarter, though McCallum connected on a 26-yarder with two minutes left for a 19-15 lead.

Calgary got within two on a safety a few minutes into the fourth, then went ahead with a touchdown a little more than midway through the stanza. Starting from their own 52, the Stamps got a 22-yard pass from Burris to Lewis on the first play. Reynolds later ripped off two consecutive runs for 30 yards, and Burris capped the drive with a one-yard TD plunge.

His completed pass to Reynolds for the two-point conversion made it a 25-19 game.

The Lions grabbed the lead back thanks to the arm of Printers, who completed five consecutive passes for 40 yards before finding Jackson for a 46-yard TD with 1:35 left, making it a 26-25 game.
