Winnipeg, MB (Sports Network) - Kevin Glenn threw three touchdown passes in the first half to lead the Hamilton Tiger-Cats to a 39-28 win over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers at Canad Inns Stadium.
Glenn converted 18-of-26 passes for 274 yards and a pair of interceptions in the victory. Running back DeAndra Cobb ran for a game-high 86 yards on 22 carries, scoring once on the ground and once through the air for the Ticats (3-4), who won for the third time in four chances against Winnipeg (2-5) already this season.
Buck Pierce, who was making his first appearance since suffering a knee injury versus these same Tiger-Cats in the middle of July, converted just 7-of-12 passing for 63 yards with one touchdown and an interception, as the Bombers lost their third in a row and fifth in the last six contests.
Steven Jyles relieved Pierce in the second half and threw for 227 yards and two scores on 14-of-22 passing for Winnipeg.
The Tiger-Cats wasted little time in making some noise in the opening quarter, scoring a major on the initial drive of the game thanks to a five-yard run by Marcus Thigpen. The score represented the fifth different way (kickoff return, punt return, missed field goal return, pass reception) in which Thigpen has registered a major this year, becoming the first player in CFL history to achieve the feat in a single season.
Adding to the early excitement was Arland Bruce III, who got behind the defense and raced 55 yards to the end zone to make the score 14-0 with just over five minutes remaining in the opening frame.
The quick start by the Tiger-Cats gave Winnipeg defensive tackle Doug Brown reason to question his team's efforts.
"It was a disrespectful display. You can't start the game playing Pop Warner and then start playing professional football later on. Things happen too fast in the CFL."
Pierce put his team in scoring position when he scrambled for a first down in Hamilton territory late in the first period. From there, the signal-caller lofted a pass over the top and into the waiting hands of Terrence Edwards in the end zone, cutting the deficit to 14-7. The 32-yard TD catch for Edwards was his sixth major of the season, one more than he had all of 2009.
Taking advantage of a lost fumble by the Blue Bombers deep in their territory, Hamilton moved out to a 21-7 lead as Cobb scored on a three-yard TD pass from Glenn. Shortly thereafter, Glenn was at it again for the Tiger-Cats, as he combined with Marquay McDaniel on a 19-yard scoring play to increase the lead to 21. The drive covered 69 yards on just three plays.
The points kept coming for the Ticats, as kicker Sandro DeAngelis knocked through his first field goal attempt of the night from 35 yards away, increasing the advantage to 31-7 midway through the second quarter.
Winnipeg showed some signs of life on defense as cornerback Jovon Johnson jumped a route around midfield, collected a weak floater thrown by Glenn and returned it 54 yards for the score to close to within 17 points late in the half.
However, before the Bombers could make it into the locker room, they surrendered one more point to Hamilton on a single by Eric Wilbur with less than a minute left on the clock.
In the second half, Winnipeg turned to Jyles at quarterback in order to provide a spark. Jyles, who was the starter in Pierce's absence, could have easily gotten his team into the end zone early in the possession, but with a receiver wide open down the left sideline, the signal-caller failed to keep the ball inbounds. A few plays later, running back Fred Reid coughed up the ball, and Garrett McIntyre recovered for the Tiger-Cats.
A short time later, the Bombers again possessed the ball, and this time Jyles led them on an eight-play, 57-yard drive that resulted in a nine-yard TD pass play to Adarius Bowman to make the score 32-21 late in the third quarter.
Early in the fourth, Hamilton marched 95 yards on eight plays, capping the drive with a two-yard TD run by Cobb, pushing the lead out to 39-21.
With under a minute remaining in the contest, Jyles managed to hit Edwards with a 21-yard TD strike, but that still left the visitors with the 11-point win.
"Every game we won (this season), we won the turnover equation," noted Winnipeg head coach Paul LaPolice after his squad turned the ball over five times. "Every game we've lost, we lost the turnover margin...a simple equation we are trying to preach to our players."
