Stampeders roll over Eskimos

Mon 16th, August 2010

Calgary, AB (Sports Network) - Henry Burris threw for 305 yards and three touchdowns, as the Calgary Stampeders trounced the Edmonton Eskimos, 56-15, at McMahon Stadium in Alberta.

Burris connected on 21-of-29 pass attempts for the Stamps (6-1), who won their fourth straight game to remain in sole possession of first place in the Western Division. Nik Lewis was his main target, as he pulled in five balls for 117 yards and a pair of scores. Joffrey Reynolds paced the ground attack with 79 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries.

"We wanted the win; we got the win," said Stampeders head coach and general manager John Hufnagel. "It's a good way to go into the bye week. I was pleased with our effort. I thought our guys prepared well all week and they came out ready to play tonight and they gave it their all for four quarters."

The Esks (1-6), who dropped their second in a row, utilized all three of their quarterbacks in the first half before losing starter Ricky Ray for the game with an injury early in the second quarter. Jared Zabransky was the most effective of the trio with 107 yards, a score and pick on 8-of-16 tosses, while Jason Maas hit on 5-of-8 throws for 62 yards and an interception.

The Stamps wasted little time getting on the board, as Reynolds scooted 27 yards for a touchdown just minutes into the game. It marked the first time this season Calgary scored on its opening drive.

Moments later, a botched punt attempt by Edmonton set up the Stamps in scoring position and they capitalized with a 33-yard field goal by Rob Maver.

A 58-yard punt by Noel Prefontaine resulted in a single, giving Edmonton its first point midway through the opening quarter.

Punter Burke Dales then connected on a 68-yarder for a Stamps single.

Calgary added to its lead early in the second quarter, when Arjei Franklin pulled in a 17-yard touchdown pass from Burris to cap a six-play, 79-yard drive.

The Esks, though, responded on the ensuing drive, as their quarterback rotation finally paid off with Zabransky hitting Jason Barnes on a 28-yard scoring strike. Zabransky's first career touchdown pass completed an eight- play, 73-drive that pulled Edmonton within 10 at 18-8.

The Stamps used an 11-play, 65-yard drive to counter on their next possession, as backup Drew Tate stepped in under center and finished things off with a short run on a third-and-one from the goal line.

Edmonton tried to make something happen just before the half, but it backfired when Dwight Anderson picked off Zabransky and took the interception back 89 yards for a score and a 32-8 advantage with 19 second remaining.

Kelly Campbell attempted to give the Esks some life after the intermission, as he returned a punt 95 yards for a touchdown just over a minute into the third quarter.

With just over five minutes left in the third, Maver surprisingly missed a 13- yard field goal, resulting in a single point for the Stamps.

Calgary put things away early in the fourth quarter after Edmonton turned the ball over on downs near midfield. Jon Cornish first broke off a 52-yard run, which was immediately followed by an eight-yard touchdown pass from Burris to Lewis for a 40-15 advantage.

The onslaught was on when Burris and Lewis hooked up again, this time for a nine-yard scoring strike several minutes later.

Edmonton's miserable night continued moments later, as it was charged a safety after Prefontaine kicked a dropped punt out the back of his own end-zone.

Tate took over for Burris late in the final frame and added to the rout with a seven-yard touchdown pass to Romby Bryant.
