Hamilton comes alive in fourth to upend Toronto

Sat 21st, August 2010

Toronto, ON (Sports Network) - DeAndra Cobb scored a touchdown late in the fourth quarter, as the Hamilton Tiger-Cats scored 13 unanswered points in the final frame to slip past the Toronto Argonauts, 16-12, in a divisional showdown at the Rogers Center.

Cobb, who scored the only touchdown in the contest for either team, finished with 99 rushing yards on 20 carries for Hamilton (4-4). Kevin Glenn, who threw one interception in the contest, finished with 247 yards on 25-of-36 passing.

Arland Bruce III came into this matchup leading the CFL in receptions and receiving yards, but the outspoken wide out finished with just 68 yards on eight catches and did not find the end zone for the first time since July 16th.

As for the Argonauts (5-3), they were led by kicker Grant Shaw, who accounted for 10 of the team's 12 points. Shaw connected on three field goals and also added a single for Toronto, which never really found a rhythm offensively.

Cleo Lemon was extremely ineffective in this contest, completing just 18-of-31 passes for 208 yards.

"Hamilton played hard," said Lemon. "We came up short and kicked too many field goals."

Cory Boyd, the league's leading rusher, was surprisingly held in check by Hamilton, as the rookie tailback rumbled for just 81 yards for Toronto, which suffered its first home loss on the season.

The Ti-Cats struck first in this contest, as Sandro DeAngelis capped off a nine-play, 72-yard drive with an 18-yard field goal.

The Argonauts responded on their next possession with a field goal of their own, as Shaw connected on a 22-yard kick with 3:56 remaining in the opening quarter.

The battle between the kickers continued in the second stanza when Shaw drilled a 47-yard field goal to give Toronto a 6-3 edge at the 7:32 mark.

Toronto took an 8-3 lead late in the second quarter when Hamilton's punter Eric Wilbur conceded a safety.

Special teams continued to dominate the first half, as Shaw's 42-yard field goal attempt was unsuccessful, but still managed to go through the end zone, giving the Argos a single and a six-point lead as the two teams went into intermission.

The Argonauts needed just a few plays in their opening drive of the second half to get inside Hamilton's red zone, but once again the offense stalled as Toronto had to settle for a 12-yard field goal by Shaw.

As for the Ti-Cats, they pushed the ball down field on their second drive of the third quarter but walked away empty-handed, as DeAngelis drilled the upright on a 35-yard field goal, leaving them behind by a nine-point margin.

It was the sixth miss on the year for DeAngelis, who missed only seven kicks all of last season.

The Tiger-Cats finally cut into their deficit early in the final frame when DeAngelis connected on a 13-yard kick.

After a quick possession by Toronto, the offense for Hamilton went right back to work, as Glenn and company methodically moved the football deep into Toronto territory. However, once again the possession ended with a field goal, as DeAngelis converted on a 30-yard kick.

On the ensuing kickoff, Jason Shivers hit Toronto's Ryan Christian, causing a fumble which was recovered by teammate Will Heyward at Toronto's 35-yard line.

Glenn took over from there, as the quarterback scrambled for a 21-yard run on second and 15 to put the Ti-Cats inside Toronto's 10-yard line. On the next play, Cobb plunged into the end zone on a six-yard run, giving Hamilton its first lead since the opening quarter at 16-12.

Toronto had a couple of possessions to mount a late comeback, but the Hamilton defense was simply too tough and was able to hold on for the four-point victory.

"After the two turnovers I told our players if we play hard things would even out," said Hamilton coach Marcel Bellefeuille. "Shivers made a smart play on special teams."
