Riders nip reeling Bombers

Sun 5th, September 2010

Regina, SK (Sports Network) - Wes Cates scored twice on the ground as the Saskatchewan Roughriders took down the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, 27-23, in a Labour Day contest from Mosaic Stadium.

Darian Durant went 22-of-34 with 301 yards and an interception along with a rushing touchdown for the Roughriders (6-3), who have alternated wins and losses in their past six games. Weston Dressler had five catches for 77 yards in the win.

"I'm so pleased for the men in our locker room and our fans," said Saskatchewan head coach Ken Miller. "It was a great win for us. We played with great effort but we have to give Winnipeg some credit. They gave us a lot of problems at times. We had a lot of positives, but some rough spots too. We'll work on those this week."

Fred Reid had a rushing touchdown while Buck Pierce went 21-of-29 with 243 yards and an interception for the Blue Bombers (2-7), who have dropped their past five games.

A single early in the game and an 18-yard field goal from Luca Congi staked Saskatchewan to an early 4-0 lead.

Winnipeg got a 27-yard field goal from Justin Palardy later in the first made it a 4-3 contest.

The Roughriders made it an 11-3 game in the second quarter on a two-yard touchdown run by Cates, but the Blue Bombers got field goals of 26 and nine yards from Palardy to make it an 11-9 contest at the break.

In the third quarter after a Winnipeg single, Cates punched the ball into the end zone from a yard out to extend the Roughriders lead to 18-10.

Winnipeg, though, made it a one-point game with under three minutes to play in the third as Reid ran the ball into the end zone from three yards out to make it an 18-17 contest.

Saskatchewan, though, padded its lead with 6:29 left in the game as Durant took the ball into the end zone from 11 yards out around the right end and followed that with a 94-yard single from Eddie Johnson for a 26-17 lead.

Johnson added another single later in the fourth and a seven-yard touchdown pass from Steven Jyles to Adarius Bowman with 10 seconds left, followed by a botched extra point attempt, accounted for the final score.

Game Notes

Jyles went 4-for-4 for 43 yards...Cates finished the game with seven carries for 15 yards...Bowman totaled eight catches for 133 yards...The Roughriders have taken five straight and six of the last seven meetings with the Blue Bombers.
